Title: Advancements in LED Technologies and their Contributions to Display Technologie
s

Abstract: From its humble beginning as a red indicator light, LED has played an important role as a component used in various display technologies. The progress of LED technologies will be reviewed together with its use in alphanumeric segment displays, dot matrix displays, full color video displays and as a light source for LCD backlighting and projection displays. This presentation will examine some of the unique features which solve certain display problems but also some of the challenges display makers still face.

Speaker Background: Francis Nguyen is a Senior Product Manager at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc, where he is responsible for product marketing of Intelligent Displays and LED products in the markets for LED displays, LCD backlighting and Projection Displays. Francis is a 30+ year veteran of the semiconductor industry, starting as electronics engineer at Fairchild Semiconductors, followed by various engineering and management positions at Kulicke and Soffa Industries Inc., a maker of semiconductor assembly equipment. Francis spent the past 16 years at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors Inc., which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens Ag. OSRAM Opto is one of the leading LED suppliers and is vertically integrated, having its own design and manufacturing facilities in chip fabrication and back-end assembly. Title: A Survey of Current and Emerging Touch-Screen Technologies

Abstract: This session will provide a fast-paced survey of ten transparent touch-screen technologies: analog resistive, surface capacitive, surface acoustic wave (SAW), infrared (IR), projected capacitive, optical, bending wave (APR & DST), force sensing, pixel-integrated photo-sensitive elements, and frustrated total internal reflection (FITR). How each technology works will be explained very briefly with a conceptual drawing. The primary applications, advantages, disadvantages, market share, market leaders and market trends of each technology will be identified. A simple method will be suggested for selecting a touch technology. What won't be covered is profiles of touch-screen suppliers, application details, cost comparisons, opaque touch, electromagnetic resonance pen digitizers, direct-RF pen digitizers, ultrasonic pen digitizers, 3rd-party touch controllers and ITO (indium tin oxide) replacement materials.

Title: Optical Characterization of Display Materials

Abstract: A systematic approach to analyze and optimize display characteristics requires the data on dielectric tensors and geometrical parameters of the display optical components such as transparent conductors, compensation layers, polarizers, liquid crystals, etc. Some of these parameters can be evaluated from reflective and transmissive measurements of single isotropic or anisotropic layers. Other parameters can be extracted from the measurements of multilayer structures. Thus, the generalized spectroscopic ellipsometry and Mueller-matrix measurements were successfully applied to LCD displays without color filters to define the liquid crystal dielectric tensor. The presence of color filter array in LC cell may cause an additional light scattering and depolarization, which substantially reduces the quality of spectroscopic data and therefore the method’s precision. In this regard the Mueller-matrix imaging polarimetry, which simultaneously measure and angularly resolve reflection and transmission over large solid angles, was used. A technical review of different methods and instruments for characterization of optical materials will be presented. Also we present new software for characterization of anisotropic multilayer structures and discuss limitations of extended Jones method and related Mueller-matrix approach for characterization of thin anisotropic coating. Several examples of the characterization of new transparent conductors based on metal nanowires and carbon nanotubes coatings will be presented as well. The real time software demonstration is available.

Speaker Background: Michael V. Paukshto received a Ph. D. in mathematical physics and a Dr. Sc. in theoretical physics and applied engineering from St.-Petersburg State University. From 1994 to 1998 he was a professor at St.-Petersburg University, as well as a visiting research scientist at the NSF Institute for Mechanics and Materials at the University of California, San Diego. Title: Volumetric Diffusion Films and Multifunctional Films for LED Backlighting

Abstract: All LCD companies are looking for thinner displays—particularly in handhelds, notebooks, and monitors—and they are increasingly switching over to LED backlighting. We will discuss Multifunctional Films and how they address these issues for the LCD industry. First, we will present a technical review of our patented volumetric diffusion technology, including optical and materials analysis. Then we will introduce our Multifunctional Film, which is a volumetric diffusion film with an embossed modified prism structure; these films can revolutionize the LCD backlight unit by lowering the bill of materials and significantly decreasing overall thickness, while improving the optical properties. Also, we will discuss designs for custom and high performance LED backlight units utilizing Fusion Optix technology.

Speaker Background: Dr. Yeo founded Fusion Optix in 2003 whilst living in Cambridge, UK. His early career, and the inspiration for Fusion Optix, was spent in the displays, aerospace and optical networking industries. Whilst working for Nortel Networks, EADS Astrium, and Nashua Corporation he performed in a number of senior management, corporate venturing, sales, marketing and technical roles. In these roles Dr. Yeo contributed to the invention, development and commercialization of a number of patented optical technologies in the areas of liquid crystal displays, microdisplay projection displays and precision optical components for use in consumer, business, aerospace and military markets. Dr. Yeo also has insider experience of the venture capital industry, having worked for Amadeus Capital Partners in the UK. He has also been a consultant to several technology companies and start-ups. Dr. Yeo holds a Ph.D. in Physics and a First Class Honors Degree in Electronic Engineering and Physics from Loughborough University. Title: Review of Head-Mounted Display for Personal Application

Abstract: Personal Viewers (Head-Mounted Displays) reached cost-competitiveness with embedded displays in 2006 and consumer applications for such displays are beginning to emerge and proliferate. The popularity of MP3 players like iPod with video capability, and the proliferation of similar devices (iPhone from Apple, etc.) means that "pocket video" is now increasingly available to consumers. Personal Viewers enable comfortable viewing via pocket video platforms. And pocket video is not the only emerging consumer application - five other applications are now appearing. Use of Personal Viewers continues to increase in its traditional military, corporate and prosumer markets as well. Yet important issues and hurdles remain for the industry. Come and learn the current market status, and try on some personal viewers for yourself.

Speaker Background: Steve Marsland is a Senior Partner at McLaughling Consulting Group in Menlo Park, CA which specializes in display and emerging technologies. MCG is the leading analyst for personal viewers. MCG was selected by the United States Display Consortium to do its 2002 study on Human Factors for Near-Eye displays. Mr. Marsland has published a report on the Personal Viewer industry each year since 2004. MCG is presently spearheading an effort to form a global industry association for Personal Viewers. Mr. Marsland has also written on the home entertainment, microdisplay, and optical films markets for display products for MCG and maintains MCG's proprietary Projector Cost and Lumens Model. Mr. Marsland holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.
