Speaker: Dr. Conor Madigan
Title: RGB OLED Inkjet Technology for Mass-Production

Abstract: Kateeva is a Silicon Valley developer of OLED flat panel display manufacturing equipment that dramatically reduces production costs. Founded in 2008, Kateeva utilizes its proprietary printing technologies to address a range of OLED manufacturing challenges and enable low cost scaling to G8 glasses and beyond. With a worldwide network of customers and partners, Kateeva's equipment is making low cost OLED displays a reality.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Conor Madigan is the Kateeva CEO and a Kateeva co-founder. Before Kateeva he was a post-doctoral research scientist at MIT and has been working in the organic electronics industry for fifteen years. He is the author of numerous publications and patents, and in 2010, he was honored as one of the TR35, the list of top young innovators in technology named annually by Technology Review magazine. Conor earned a Bachelor's degree from Princeton and a Ph.D. from MIT; both degrees are in electrical engineering.

Title: The Internet of Things: Show Me the Money!

Abstract: The Internet of Things has sparked great investment and media coverage. Fantastic stories are told as to what can be done when we live in an IoT enabled world. But how do we get there from here? Who is even talking about buying 100 million internet connected autonomous nodes let alone ten billion? This presentation will look at the business and technology drivers and challenges facing IoT. It will address who are going to be the big spenders on IoT in the short term – and who are not. It will look at some of the technology bottlenecks – in other words, the opportunities – that need to be addressed and what is being done to address them so far, from energy harvesting of self powered nodes to security. The presentation will conclude with an assessment of the potential market size based on new data from IDTechEx Research and hopefully provide you with a fresh perspective on your opportunities amidst the frenzy.

Speaker Biography: Raghu Das MA (Cantab) is CEO of IDTechEx. He has a MA Natural Sciences degree from Cambridge University, where he studied physics. He has been closely involved with the development of printed electronics for ten years, carrying out consultancy in Europe, USA, Asia and the Middle East. He has lectured as an expert at over 300 events and conferences around the world and is author of several IDTechEx publications. He leads IDTechEx consulting effort and research programs. Title: Overcoming Challenges in LED Technology for Signage Applications

Abstract: The market for signage displays, particularly the indoor signage segment is growing rapidly. Current LED technology has neither the resolution nor the cost structure to support consumer applications. The speaker will discuss the current challenges with LED displays that has limited its use to commercial applications and propose improved technologies that are enabling the use of LED displays in consumer applications. These new technologies also enable higher brightness, more uniform, lower power LED displays apart from the higher resolution. The talk will cite examples of high resolution LED technology for indoor consumer applications such as Broadcast/TV studios, Retail Signage, Control Room and Military, Museums and indoor sports venues.

Speaker Biography: Robert Young is Vice President of Business Development for SiliconCore Technology and he joined the company since May 2009. Prior to joining SiliconCore Technology, Robert worked at various Silicon Valley companies, including SST, Atmel, PMCFlash and IDT. Robert has over 25 years of experience in semiconductor industry and his interests are LED display Technolgy, Smart LED lighting system, Solar energy Technology, Consumer Electronics, Solid state Drive and memory technology. Robert holds a Master of Electrical Engineering degree from Syracuse University.

Title: Portable & IoT Display Challenges & Opportunities, Looking Ahead 1~5 years

Abstract: The display industry has experienced significant growth, in technology, applications, and recently: even profitability. But as new applications and content arise, the compromises we’ve come to accept as part of nature of modern systems with displays, are/will-be facing very difficult challenges. The presentation will cover some of the key issues, market dynamics, and reasons why customers and consumers will be expecting better for portable & IoT (Internet of Things) devices with displays. As well as some of the key areas, with opportunities for successfully adapting display applications, to embrace the revolution.

Speaker Biography: David Wyatt, grew up in small town rural Australia, studying semiconductor data books from giants like Fairchild, Texas Instruments, Intel, both designing circuits and writing software as a teenager. Years later, David followed his engineering passion emigrating to Taiwan, and finally to the Bay Area, where he’s worked for Graphics companies including Weitek, Chips & Technologies, and Intel for 8yrs. And recently, Distinguished Engineer at NVIDIA, for more than 9yrs, as both Platform Architect & Display Technologist. David’s published innovations cover a wide range of disruptive display technologies including variable refresh, self refresh, partial refresh, burst refresh, and content adaptive & regional backlight control, and color management, as well as multiple aspects of platform power optimization, for devices with displays.

If implemented by New Space entrepreneurs, SHEPHERD may be the key technical innovation to open the solar system to sustainable human presence and economic development by the mid 21st Century.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Bruce Damer is an entrepreneur in design and science, having developed some of the first user interfaces on PCs in the 1980s, pioneered innovative uses of multi-user virtual worlds in the 1990s, and spacecraft designs and architectures in the 2000s. He holds a post at UC Santa Cruz working on chemical models for the origin of life and has built one of the largest collections of vintage computer hardware and software in his DigiBarn Computer Museum in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Title: Interacting with 3D Displays: presentation and demonstration

 

Abstract: A novel three dimensional user interface technology (3D UI) is demonstrated. The interface is a single planar device enabling multiple modes of human/machine interaction operating continuously from on the device surface to off the device surface; a surface-to-air capability. For example, our device can not only sense multiple finger touch and multiple stylus interaction on its surface, but also can detect “air touch”, “air pinch” and gestures in the near field space up to several inches above its surface. Thus, two dimensional user interface functionality has been extended continuously into the third dimension above the device.

Speaker Biography: John M. Wyrwas is a Staff Engineer with Qualcomm Corporate Research and Development laboratories, part of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., in Santa Clara, California. He received the B.S. degrees in physics and electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 2007, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering and computer sciences from the University of California, Berkeley, in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Since 2012, he has been with Qualcomm in the Bay Area. His research interests include sensors, optoelectronics, computer vision, and brain computer interfaces.

Speaker Biography: Hae Jong Seo received PhD degree in electrical engineering at the University of California, Santa Cruz and the BS and MS degrees in electrical engineering from Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul, Korea, in 2005 and 2006, respectively. His research interests are in the domain of image processing, computer vision, and machine learning. He is a member of the IEEE and ACM. He is currently a senior engineer at Qualcomm CR&D.

Speaker Biography: Paul Semenza is an independent consultant who utilizes his expertise in global technology industries and markets. He has managed technology analyst businesses in flat panel displays, touch, flexible electronics, and solar PV, including DisplaySearch and Solarbuzz (as part of The NPD Group), iSuppli Corporation and Stanford Resources, Inc. Prior to his work in market research, Paul worked in technology policy, as a program officer at the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council, and an analyst for the US Congress Office of Technology Assessment (OTA). Paul started his career in engineering, as a member of technical staff at The Analytic Sciences Corporation. Paul received his Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and Master's degree in Electro-optics from Tufts University, and a Master's degree in Public Policy from the Harvard Kennedy School.

Speaker: Dr. Nikhil Balram, President and CEO of Ricoh Innovations Corporation
Title: Making Computer Vision Work for Humans

Abstract: Image recognition using feature matching has existed for well over a decade. But it has not seen large scale mainstream use because of the gap between what different variants of the technology can deliver versus the kind of natural usage people have in mind for their personal or business tasks. Bridging that gap has required the use of the Deep Innovation model to produce computer vision solutions that can be used by ordinary people to enhance their work and lives. This seminar will provide an overview of the state of the art in these techniques and illustrate, with demonstrations, how these are being implemented into useful and natural solutions. It will also provide a vision of the future.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Nikhil Balram is President and CEO of Ricoh Innovations Corporation (ric.ricoh.com), a Silicon Valley company that develops innovative technologies and creates glo bal new businesses for Ricoh Company Ltd. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Balram is widely hailed throughout industry and academia as an expert and innovator in advanced information technologies and has been an officer of five publicly listed companies. He has won numerous awards including a 2012 Gold Stevie® Award for Executive of the Year in the Electronics category in The 9th Annual International Business Awards, a 2012 Fellow Award by the Society for Information Display (SID) and the 2011 Alumni Achievement Award by Carnegie Mellon University. Dr. Balram is an adjunct professor of electrical engineering at Carnegie Mellon University, visiting professor of vision science at the University of California, Berkeley, a guest professor of design and innovation at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar, India, and serves on the Industry Advisory Board (IAB) at the School of Engineering at Santa Clara University. He has over 100 US and international patents granted or pending, more than 40 technical publications, including two invited book chapters, and has given over 25 keynote speeches at major conferences and events worldwide, including the 2013 Silicon Valley Business App (SVBA) Awards and the International Business Forum at the 2013 Ricoh Women’s British Open at St. Andrews, UK. He received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

Title: Unlocking the full potential of mobile video: How Much Resolution Is Enough?

Abstract: Mobile display resolutions continue to increase. This presentation explores what resolution makes sense and why Video Display Processing is required.

Speaker Biography: Neil Woodall joined Pixelworks in July 2002 as a Principal Engineer and during that time has been the company's DSP Engineering Fellow, Chief Architect and Vice President of DSP Engineering. Prior to joining Pixelworks, Mr. Woodall was a Senior Architect with Jaldi Semiconductor Corporation, a designer of audio and video semiconductor products, until it was acquired by Pixelworks in 2002. Prior to 2002, he held a variety of engineering management, contract and consulting positions in the video/audio industry. Mr. Woodall has registered 9 U.S. patents in the areas of video image and signal processing, and his expertise makes him a sought-after speaker and frequent writer on some of the industry's most innovative topics. Mr. Woodall holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California and an M.B.A from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

Speaker: Dr. Hongmei Zang, VP of R&D at E Ink
Title: A Highlight Color Electrophoretic Display for ESL Market

Abstract: E Ink launched SpectraTM Imaging film in 2014 as world first commercial highlight color electrophoretic display product. Spectra displays utilize black, white and red engineered particles in a colorless solvent to achieve red plus Black/White independent optical states without a color filter array. The technology, performance, and applications of Spectra product will be discussed in this presentation.

Speaker Biography: As the Associate Vice President of Research and Development of E Ink California, LLC., Hongmei Zang is responsible for innovations in material and process for display front panel product designs and early stage of product development. She joined SiPix Imaging Inc. in 2000, which was acquired by E Ink Holding in 2012. She is the key inventor of microcup® electrophoretic display technologies. Hongmei Zang received her PhD in Photochemical Sciences from Bowling Green State University.

Speaker: Dr. Zahir Yılmaz Alpaslan, Director of Display Systems at Ostendo Technologies, Inc.
Title: Quantum Photonic Imager (QPI®): A New Display Technology and Its Applications

Abstract: QPI® is an emissive spatial light modulator (SLM) that combines the light generation and modulation together at the pixel level, eliminating the waste in most existing SLMs in which light is separately generated, collimated then modulated. This talk will explain the QPI architecture and give examples of QPI’s applications in various areas.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Alpaslan received his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees all from the University of Southern California in 1999, 2000 and 2005 respectively. Currently, Dr. Alpaslan is the Director of Display Systems at Ostendo Technologies. His research interests include, design, fabrication and calibration of novel 2D and 3D display systems, rendering, compression and enhancement methods for full parallax light field displays. He is a member of IEEE, OSA and SID.

Speaker: Dr. Helge Seetzen
Title: The Past, Present and Future of HDR

Abstract: From the early work on HDR imaging over the initial local dimming prototypes and finally the current emerging HDR displays, Helge Seetzen will recap the evolution of the technology over the last ~20 years. The talk will cover some of the key technical and commercial challenges that had, and in some cases still have, to be overcome to bring high dynamic range displays to the living room for everybody.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Helge Seetzen is an award-winning technologist, entrepreneur, and a recognized global authority on technology transfer and display technologies. As General Partner of TandemLaunch, he works with inventors and entrepreneurs to build high growth technology companies. His past successes include the transformation of raw university IP into fully commercialized LED TV technology, including selling his last company - Brightside Technologies - to Dolby Laboratories after sealing partnerships with several of the largest consumer electronics companies in the world. Helge holds over 50 patents in the fields of display, camera and video technology. As a technical leader, he served as the General Chair for Display Week, as well as currently on the Executive Board of the Society for Information Display. He has published over 20 journal articles, writes a regular column on venture capital innovation in the Information Display Magazine, and holds over 50 patents with an additional 60 pending US applications. Helge received a B.Sc. in physics and a Ph.D. in interdisciplinary imaging technology (physics & computer science) from the University of British Columbia.
