ICDM

ICDM is the International Committee for Display Metrology, part of SID's Definitions and Standards Committee charged with setting standards for display metrology. ICDM is largely focused on the production of the Information Display Measurements Standard, which has about 140 display measurements covering every area of displays. The standard is intended to include nearly every display technology for multiple user types, from display manufacturers to consumers. The ICDM does not mediate any issues concerning companies reporting any data obtained through their use of the content of the IDMS document. According to Section 1.1.3 in IDMS, "(the ICDM) does not set compliance values for any of its measurements. That is the job of other standards organizations." Please refer to the relevant sections of the IDMS for further clarification.

Premier Display Measurement Standard Available

The International Committee for Display Metrology (ICDM) and the Society for Information Display (SID) released the original version of the Information Display Measurements Standard (IDMS) in 2012 (version 1.03). The ICDM released updated versions in 2021 (v1.1) and 2023 (v1.2). The IDMS is the "Go-To" document for standard measurement procedures to quantify electronic display characteristics and qualities. The original IDMS and its updates are the culmination of years of effort by engineers and scientists across dozens of organizations to codify the science of display measurement, explain some of the difficulties associated with making measurements, and offer solutions to help make the measurements properly. The IDMS has benefited from the expertise of display metrologists, electrical, mechanical, software and optical engineers, physicists, vision scientists, and experts from other display-related disciplines. The ICDM is currently developing IDMS v1.3, targeted for release in 2025, which will update and add new content to the v1.2 release.

To promote the spread and use of the measurement procedures and techniques within the display community, an electronic version of the IDMS is freely available. It is unprecedented in the display community that a work of this scope and depth is distributed at no charge. This decision follows the philosophy of the ICDM and SID, which is to provide the standard to as wide an audience as possible to help establish the techniques within the document as universal methods for display measurement. This document has been updated twice since its initial release and will continue to evolve, with further updates, supplemental files, and other value-added content that will keep pace with advances in the industry.

The IDMS features the following:

  • Self-contained measurement procedures that are clear and easy to use
  • A library of commonly used and newly developed display measurements
  • Dozens of new display measurements for current and future displays
  • Adaptability - allows a variety of equipment for measurements
  • Diagnostics, cautions, and useful hints
  • Tools, including software and spreadsheets, where applicable
  • Tutorials and other supplemental sections are included

Benefits of using the IDMS include:

  • Lower costs: consume less time and money due to unambiguous definitions of measurement methods
  • Reduce development lead times by using standardized metrics
  • Provide a common language to reduce risk of disagreements regarding performance
  • Increase customer satisfaction by having more accurate, reliable, and repeatable performance characterizations
  • Convenience: provide all measurement procedures and auxiliary information under a single cover

Former ICDM Chair, Joe Miseli, stated “IDMS v1.03 is the first standard from the ICDM and SID. It is a defining work for evaluating displays and is the most comprehensive display measurement and metrology methods standard yet produced. It provides a full set of common and more specialized display measurement procedures to characterize display performance. It also includes new and innovative measurements never before standardized for characterizing modern displays, as well as many references to clarify and expand upon metrology foundations and techniques. It builds upon the tremendous amount of work of many, especially the first ICDM Editor, Ed Kelley, a former NIST physicist and one of the foremost metrologists in the display industry. The IDMS is written in plain English with abundant use of graphics and examples that make it simple to use and so can be widely applied throughout the display industry. It is all-inclusive so that everything one needs is available in a single volume."

Former SID President, Brian Berkeley, stated, "SID is proud to release the IDMS and its subsequent updates. This landmark standard is the culmination of untold hours of effort on the part of contributors representing a broad cross-section of the display field. Working under the auspices of SID, and with the cooperation of the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA), the ICDM has created a valuable standard that truly advances display measurement science. The IDMS will enable and promote consistency in the characterization and reporting of critical display performance parameters. Considering the rapid pace of innovation and advances in display science, the IDMS meets a tremendous need for the display industry. SID congratulates and extends its thanks to all of the ICDM members for their profound contribution."

IDMS v1.2 is the follow-up to versions 1.03 and 1.1. The IDMS does not set performance thresholds but gives guidance about the proper ways to measure displays. This standard will allow component suppliers, display manufacturers, and customers to clearly communicate, understand, and agree with the measurement and characterization methods upon which performance standards are based.

Test Pattern Downloads

The ICDM Test Patterns are copyright the Society for Information Display but can be downloaded and used freely. If you publish or redistribute them, please keep their titles, file names, and copyright notices, and acknowledge the ICDM.

The display test patterns can be used for testing with the IDMS (Information Display Measurement Standard) version 1.1a  or for general display performance measurements or evaluation. They were initially developed by Edward F. Kelley when he was with NIST, with contributions from Joe Miseli. Thanks also to Michael H. Brill for the concept of the Color Inversion Pattern (see files CINV01_...).

The patterns are native format patterns for displays that support the corresponding horizontal and vertical input pixel counts. The dash number indicates the revision level of the pattern. Each successive update to the test pattern sets will be seen as an increment to the version number in the title. For example, the current bitmapped test pattern file ICDM-00_1920x1080.zip will increment to be ICDM-01_1920x1080.zip when the next version is available.

By downloading any test pattern, I indicate that I have read and agree to the IDMS End User License Agreement.

4.         Ownership.  Title, ownership rights, and intellectual property rights in and to the IDMS shall remain with SID.  The IDMS is protected by United States Copyright Law and international copyright treaties, as well as other intellectual property laws and treaties.  There is no transfer to you of any title to or ownership of the IDMS and this Agreement shall not be construed as a sale of any rights in the IDMS.

5.         Revisions.  If you acquire any authorized revised version, updated version, modified version, or additions to or for the IDMS, such version or addition shall be included in the IDMS and governed under this Agreement.

6.         Limitation of Liability.  THE IDMS IS PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTY OF FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND IMPLIED WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT WILL SID OR ITS AFFILIATES OR MEMBERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY DAMAGES, WHATSOEVER, WHETHER DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, WHETHER ARISING UNDER CONTRACT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY, MISREPRESENTATION, OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGES FOR LOSS OF BUSINESS PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF BUSINESS INFORMATION, OR OTHER PECUNIARY LOSS, ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO EITHER THE USE OF THE IDMS, OR THIS AGREEMENT, EVEN IF SID OR ITS REPRESENTATIVE HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.  SOME STATES DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF DAMAGES IN CERTAIN TRANSACTIONS, AND IN SUCH STATES, THE ABOVE LIMITATIONS AND EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY.

7.         Termination.  This Agreement and any and all rights granted to you hereunder will terminate automatically upon any breach by you of the terms of this Agreement.  Sections 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 will survive any termination of this Agreement.  Upon termination of such rights, you agree that the IDMS, and all copies thereof, will be immediately destroyed.

10.        Arbitration; Waiver of Right to Jury Trial and Participation in Class Actions.   To the maximum extent permissible under applicable law:

            (a)        WAIVER OF JURY TRIAL.  EACH OF US WAIVES OUR RESPECTIVE RIGHTS TO A TRIAL BY JURY OF ANY CONTROVERSY OR CLAIM (“CLAIM”) BETWEEN US ARISING OUT OF OR RELATING TO THE IDMS OR THIS AGREEMENT OR ANY RELATED AGREEMENTS, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ANY CLAIM BASED ON OR ARISING FROM AN ALLEGED TORT.  ANY CLAIM SHALL INSTEAD BE DETERMINED BY BINDING ARBITRATION – EACH PARTY THUS WAIVES ITS RIGHT TO A JURY TRIAL.

            (b)        ARBITRATION.  Arbitration shall be conducted in Los Angles, California, in accordance with the Federal Arbitration Act (Title 9, U.S. Code),  notwithstanding any choice of law provision in this Agreement, and under the rules of the American Arbitration Association (“AAA”).  Either you or we may, by summary proceedings (e.g., a motion to stay further proceedings) bring an action in any court having jurisdiction for the sole purpose of compelling compliance with this arbitration provision. The Proceeding shall be commenced at the request of the claiming party.  A Claim shall be decided by one arbitrator who shall be a lawyer licensed to practice law in the state in which the arbitration is conducted.  Any Claim shall be arbitrated pursuant to the AAA’s Commercial Arbitration Rules.  Any Claim for an amount under $10,000 shall be arbitrated pursuant to the AAA’s Arbitration Rules for Consumer-Related Disputes. Discovery, to the extent permitted by AAA Rules, shall be expressly limited to matters directly relevant to the Claim.  The arbitrator and the AAA shall fully enforce this requirement.  The arbitrator’s decision shall be binding and shall not be subject to further review or appeal except as otherwise required by applicable law.  Judgment upon the arbitration award may be entered in any court having jurisdiction.  Each party agrees to keep all Claims and arbitration proceedings strictly confidential, except for disclosures of information required in the ordinary course of business of the parties or by applicable law or regulation.

            (c)         WAIVER OF “CLASS ACTION” CLAIMS.  ANY ARBITRATION PROCEEDING CONDUCTED UNDER THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE LIMITED TO OUR INDIVIDUAL CLAIMS AGAINST EACH OTHER, AND NO CLAIM OF ANY OTHER PARTY SHALL BE SUBJECT TO ARBITRATION IN SUCH ARBITRATION PROCEEDING ON ANY BASIS WHATSOEVER, WHETHER BY CONSOLIDATION, BY CLASS OR REPRESENTATIVE PRINCIPLES (THAT IS, A SO CALLED “CLASS ACTION”) OR  IN A PRIVATE ATTORNEY GENERAL CAPACITY, OR OTHERWISE – EACH PARTY THEREFORE WAIVES ITS RIGHT TO JOIN ITS CLAIM WITH CLAIMS OF ANY OTHER PARTY.

            (d)        EXCEPTIONS:  Notwithstanding anything else stated in this Agreement, including without limitation in Section 9 or Sections 10(a)-(c), SID shall have the right to initiate and maintain any action in any court having subject matter jurisdiction for the additional purpose of obtaining temporary or preliminary injunctive relief that SID reasonably believes necessary to protect or enforce its copyrights, and other proprietary and intellectual property rights, in and to the IDMS.
