Save the Date: IDW

December 4-6, 2024 | Sapporo, Japan

IDW consists of workshops technically categorized into specialized domains playing important roles in the information display technology and its application. Each workshop organizes its own sessions, which consist of oral presentations by invited/contributing speakers and poster presentations. There will also be demo sessions where you can see and experience actual devices or technologies related to the content of the presentations. The workshops should be of interest not only to researchers and engineers but also to those who manage companies and institutions in the information display community.

Displays Beyond Visual Metrics: What Physiology Tells Us About Daylight's Importance

Abstract: While computer screens have made images more arresting, digital eye strain kept growing in prevalence. Beyond the obvious rise in screen time, the spectral and temporal properties of displays also contribute significantly. Here, we draw lessons from light sensitivity and recent advances in understanding their physiological mechanisms. Incomplete light spectra disrupt the regulation of processes ranging from basic cellular metabolism to pupil control. Proper emmetropization requires a continuous spectrum balancing both ends of the visible range, whereas narrow-band spectra increase accommodative demand. These visual processes contribute to myopia and eye strain. High-gamut images induce long-term adaptation effects, making the real world appear dull. Beyond blue light and melanopic light levels, other spectral components provide circadian cues linked to the rhythmicity of physiological mechanisms. Similarly, oxidative stress caused by short-wavelength light is modulated by metabolic facilitatory and inhibitory effects of other spectral regions, including near-infrared wavelengths. Finally, flicker — even at kilohertz frequencies — negatively impacts both visual and neurological functions. Together, these aspects speak for a re-evaluation of display light emissions and call for a new trend towards more natural display characteristics.
