We have an exciting start to the season with a talk by Dr. Craig Armiento, Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Professor at UMass Lowell, Director of the Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC), Co-Director for the Raytheon-UMass Lowell Research Institute (RURI) and Director for the Photonics, Electromagnetics and Nanoelectronics Center (CPEN). He will be presenting “Developing Printed Electronics for DoD Applications through University, Corporate, and Government Partnerships”.

An Opportunity to tour the brand new Saab ETIC home of RURI and PERC at UMass Lowell


The brand-new state-of-the art facility focused on Additive Manufacturing and Printed Electronics was opened in January 2015. Industry and University collaborators can design a concept using a multi-physics computer simulation then create the design using 3D and 2D systems. With the design in-hand, walk down the hall and test the RF and microwave characteristics.  Soon, you will be able to integrate the design into operating radar and antenna systems on the campus.


The facility is built in order to develop new devices and subsystems providing electromagnetic, electronic and photonic functionality for the DoD; 3D and 2D printed antennas, radars, frequency selective surfaces, transistors, coplanar waveguides, metamaterials, remote-access RFIDs, and hybrid systems with ultra-thin chips and printed interconnects.

For directions, we suggest using a GPS. Once you reach University Avenue, it is easier to navigate visually. You will park in the Cumnock lot which is located across the street from the Saab building. On one side of the street is Southwick Hall which is a yellow brick building and adjacent to Southwick Hall on University Avenue is Cumnock Hall, a grey stone building. Between the two buildings is a driveway entrance to the attended parking lot. The guard house is grey.


Once you have parked, the SAAB Emerging Technologies and Innovation Center is the large grey/red stone and glass building across the street from the parking lot. For a visual reference, the website, www.uml.edu/PERC/

PRESENTATION
Developing Printed Electronics for DoD Applications through University/Corporate/Government Partnerships


The University of Massachusetts Lowell has established a center for development of Printed Electronics (PE) with a focus on RF/microwave applications. This research effort will be done in conjunction with corporate and government partners. This talk will discuss the Raytheon-U Mass Lowell Research Institute (RURI) and will describe work on printed antennas and frequency selective surfaces. The Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC), which is partially supported by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, will establish a team of companies focused on developing the PE supply chain with a focus on the defense cluster in the region.


GUEST SPEAKER
Dr. Craig Armiento

Craig Armiento is a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. In addition to directing Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC), he is also Director of the Center for Photonics, Electromagnetics and Nanoelectronics (PEN). He is a founder and Co-Director of the Raytheon-UMass Lowell Research Institute (RURI). Prof. Armiento served as ECE Department Chair from 2005-2011. Prof. Armiento’s current research interests are printed electronics and antennas, photonic devices, advanced packaging, Flex-Hybrid integration and RFIDs. Prof. Armiento teaches courses in Electronics, Solid State Devices and Fiber Optic Communications.


Prior to coming to UMass Lowell in 2003, Prof. Armiento had over twenty years of industrial R&D experience. He led research projects at GTE Laboratories (now Verizon) on projects including Fiber-to-the-Home (now FiOS), optoelectronic hybrid integration, III-V device fabrication and GaAs ICs. He also was Director of Optical Networking at Lightchip Optical Networks Inc. and was a researcher at M.I.T. Lincoln laboratory. Prof. Armiento has over 100 publications and presentations and 16 U.S. patents. He received his Ph.D., E.E. and S.M. degrees in Electrical Engineering from M.I.T and a B.S.E.E from Manhattan College.

MicroDisplays and Optics modules for Smart Headsets

 

Please join us for a rare opportunity to learn more about the latest technology in Microdisplays and associated optics from one of the leaders in this field.  In this talk, an introduction to Kopin and its transmissive microdisplays, compact optics modules and low-power driver ASICs for smart headsets will be presented. Dr. Hong Choi is Chief Technology Officer of Kopin Corporation. He has been working in formulating the Company’s business and R&D strategies and is in charge of intellectual properties. Prior to joining Kopin in 2000, Dr. Choi was working as a Senior Staff member at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory. He received his Ph. D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

SID New England Chapter will host the Annual SID New England Dinner with Technical Presentations at the Conference Center at Waltham Woods in Waltham MA on January 29, 2015 with events beginning at 5:30PM.

Ken Werner from Nutmeg Consultants and John Van Derlofske from 3M will be the guest speakers who will present a review of Advanced Television Displays Technologies and Products.

Event admission is $25 for members of SID and OSA, $30 for non-members and $10 for Students. A buffet dinner will be provided. A cash bar will be available.

Presentation Abstract

Television has been mired in a swamp of commodization, but several technologies now entering the market promise to re-ignite the consumer’s enthusiasm and encourage them to pay for premium features.

The technologies featured in these presentation – OLED, IGZO, Quantum-dot enhancement components, 4K, 2K to 4K up- conversions and Sharp Q+ are available in commercial products, although they are not yet mainstream. Some will increase their market presence slowly, but at least one will enter the marketplace in the near term.

As the definition of “television” expands, and as consumers spend more time doing their TV and video viewing on smaller screens, we shall see new “television” technologies migrating to phone, tablets and industrial applications.

Exit at the Wyman /Winter St Exits off Rt. #128, go north on Winter St Remain in the far right lane through two sets of lights, passing the Embassy Suites Hotel on your left. Travel around the Cambridge Reservoir (on right) for approximately .5 mile (pass AstraZeneca on left). Take next left at the granite sign announcing Health Point and Waltham Woods Corporate Center. How the Ray Gun Got Its Zap! Odd Excursions in Optics



The Ray Gun is a familiar pop culture icon, ubiquitous in science fiction and fantasies from Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon through Star Trek and Star Wars to the latest movies. But it is not an obvious or inevitable outgrowth of speculative fiction – there are no ray guns in the works of Jules Verne, or in Edgar Rice Burroughs’s stories of Mars (at least, until they started to appear elsewhere in fiction). Where did it come from, and how did it assume the central position it occupies in futuristic and alien armories?

Stephen R. Wilk is a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America, and for the past decade has been a Contributing Editor for Optics and Photonics News. He has worked for GE, AOtec, Optikos, Textron, Lincoln Labs, Cognex, and elsewhere. Steve has been a Visiting Professor of Electro-Optics at Tufts and a Visiting Scientist at MIT. He has written on Optics, Physics, History, Mythology, and Pop Culture. His first book was Medusa: Solving the Mystery of the Gorgon. His latest book is How the Ray Gun Got Its Zap! – Odd Excursions in Optics, which was published by Oxford University Press in October.

Ken Werner , of Nutwood Associates, a technology observer of the displays sector will present an overview of advanced television technologies.

 Much of the information and many of the insights to be presented were originally presented by a roster of speakers at SID LA Chapter’s “One Day Conference  on Advanced Television Technologies” held on February 7,2014 for which Ken was program chair. Their individual contributions will be acknowledged during tonight’s presentation.

This  presentation will be held at the Sheraton Framingham , Framingham ,MA on May 1, 2014 @ 6PM.Refreshments and pizza will be served. A cash bar is available .

 Admission for SID members is $15,. Admission for other members of other technical organization is $20.
