Unveils the Best of the Best
SID is proud to announce its prestigious annual individual
Honors & Awards recipients for 2008-this year recognized
15 exceptional individuals from across the globe, all of whom
represent the highest achievement in the display community. A
round of applause goes out to all these creative and talented
individuals for their respective contributions in helping take
this dynamic industry to new levels. This year's winners
include:

Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize-Dr. Richard Williams, for
the pioneering discovery of a significant electro-optic
effect in liquid-crystal materials and the recognition
of its importance to flat-panel displays.

Jan Rajchman Prize-Dr. Shin-Tson Wu, in recognition of
his exceptional contributions to liquid-crystal display
science and technology, especially in display device
physics, electro-optic effects and materials.

Otto Schade Prize-Dr. Louis D. Silverstein, for his
many contributions to the enhancement of display
performance and image quality, including pioneering
efforts in integrating display technology with color
science.

Slottow-Owaki Prize-Dr. Tatsuo Uchida, for his
remarkable contributions to the education of students
and company researchers in the field of liquid-crystal
displays. Of particular note is that Dr. Uchida is a
two-time winner of a major SID Award.

SID Rolls Out the Red Carpet-Display
Week 2008 Premieres in May
The glamour of Hollywood meets the latest in display
technology, all under one roof!
SID's annual SID International Symposium, Seminar and
Exhibition (Display Week 2008) debuts at the Los Angeles
Convention Center from May 18 - 23, 2008. This year's event
promises to be the best gathering yet of scientists,
engineers, manufacturers, marketers and users in the field of
electronic-information displays. Now in its 46th year, Display
Week will feature a record 73 sessions of invited and
contributed papers with 272 oral presentations and 238 poster
presentations surrounding topics such as plasma, OLEDs,
e-paper, projection, LCD, microdisplays, among others.
New to this year's event is an afternoon of invited
presentations centered around the cutting edge of the
resurgent 3D cinema industry. Scheduled to be held Wed., May
21st, the 3D Cinema Special Session will span the full
pipeline of the 3D movie process, from content creation
(animation and live action), to editing and post production
and stereoscopic theatrical display. Real D will provide
stereoscopic projection equipment and viewing glasses for all
audience members, enabling the all-star list of speakers to
show illustrative clips from their bodies of work-including U2
3D, Beowulf, Meet the Robinsons, Monster House, Chicken Little
and The Polar Express. Be sure to come see how the
characteristics of 3D display technologies shape every aspect
of the movie creation process.
For a comprehensive look at everything you need to know in
order to design and integrate a display into your product,
check out the Display Applications Special Session to be
presented on Thurs., May 22nd. Learn the basics of how to
select an appropriate display for your product, to in-depth
analysis of individual display technologies and a chance to
network with leading display innovators. Speakers have been
invited based on their expertise and will convey practical
knowledge in their respective areas that can be put to
immediate use in specific display applications.
Also of note is that the annual Business Conference will be
held on Mon. and Tues., May 19th and 20th and will feature an
exciting line up of some of senior executives at leading
display industrial organizations. The Investors Conference
also returns and will be held on Tue. and Wed., May 20th and
21st. Co-sponsored by Cowen & Co., LLC, a securities and
investment banking firm, this conference will feature company
presentations from leading public and private display
companies, intended to appeal primarily to securities
analysts, portfolio managers, investors, M&A specialists
and display company executives.
But that's not all-the week promises to be action-packed

Get Behind the Wheel For SID's 15th
Annual Vehicle Symposium
Fasten your seatbelts for SID's 15th Annual Symposium,
Vehicles and Photons event taking place Oct. 16 - 17, 2008 in
Dearborn, Mich.
The industry is moving at full speed to bring leading-edge
technological ideas and innovation to the continuously
evolving automotive market. Organized by SID's Detroit
chapter, this year's conference will bring together some of
the most accomplished scientists and engineers from the
display, photonics, and vehicle systems communities. So, get
ready to start your engines on Thurs., October 16th and Fri.,
October 17th at the University of Michigan-Dearborn Fairlane
Center.
Don't take a back seat to this year's event-SID welcomes
you to submit one page extended abstracts for presentations,
particularly in the areas of display and lighting technologies
applicable to vehicular applications, application issues with
vehicular displays and lighting, human-vehicle-interface
(a.k.a., HMI) and system solutions, and advanced technologies
for device development and/or vehicle applications. The
deadline for receipt of abstracts is July 21, 2008, with
notification sent by August 4, 2008. Authors of accepted
papers are expected to submit a complete paper for inclusion
in the Conference Book by September 5, 2008, which will be
distributed to all attendees at the Symposium.

Spring is in the Air-Latest Chapter
Updates
The SID Mid-Europe Chapter's annual Spring Meeting is right
around the corner, promising an exciting line up of technical
and scientific presentations slated for Europe's display
professionals. This year's event will be held March 13 - 14,
2008 at the Abbe Center in Jena, Germany.
The 2008 spring meeting will focus on different aspects of
microdisplays and their applications. Basic technology will be
covered as well as optical components and systems or
applications in multimedia and niche markets.
The meeting will close on the second day with a visit to
Fraunhofer IOF laboratories. For more information on the

Gung Hay Fat Choy-Happy New Year from
SID!
The Year of the Rat represents the beginning of a new
phase. SID is taking this to heart and one of our New Year's
resolutions is to improve SIDirect, but we need your
help.
We strive to provide a valuable service to our members and
the display industry. We would like to hear how we can enhance
our overall value and better serve you with SIDirect.
Specifically, we'd be interested in hearing what types of
topics and features you would be interested in seeing in this
monthly forum. This marks our first issue in the Chinese New
Year, and we're pleased to announce a significant change to
our usual format moving forward as we will be featuring
contributed articles from SID members/peers on subjects that
matter most to you, your business and the display industry at
large.
Together, we can truly make this a year to remember. We
strongly welcome any suggestions or comments on how we can
make SIDirect a more useful tool for you. If you would

The 28th Annual International
Display Research Conference Planning Is Now In The Works SID
has issued the first call for papers for IDRC 2008, which will
be held at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, from
November 3 - 6, 2008. The IDRC will feature a workshop
surrounding high-efficacy displays, along with a series of
technical sessions covering all areas of display research.
Also of importance will be an open house held at the
University of Central Florida's College of Optics and
Photonics.
The abstract and manuscript submission deadline is July 11,
2008. All authors are required to upload their submissions
online at: http://www.sid.org/idrc2008/idrc2008.html.
