Cutting-Edge Display Technology Highlights SID 2006 Exhibition

With approximately five weeks left before SID 2006 in San Francisco, the exhibition is shaping up to be the biggest and best in the event's 40-plus-year history. As always, the most cutting-edge, innovative products in the display world will be showcased during the three-day exhibition portion of SID's signature event, which will take place June 4-9, 2006 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, USA.

As of April 26, 285 companies have booked 570 booths for SID 2006, occupying more than 57,000 square feet of space, according to Danielle Rocco, Exhibit Sales Director for Palisades Convention Management Inc. This represents an increase from SID 2005 in Boston, where 254 companies occupied 555 booths-this had been the largest exhibition in the four-decade-plus history of the event.

Included among the exhibitors at SID 2006 are 53 companies that will be exhibiting at SID for the first time or will be returning after not exhibiting at SID for the past several years. These companies, which cover just about every aspect of the display industry, hail from 10 different countries and represent the growing worldwide interest in the display industry. Overall, there are 16 countries represented by SID 2006 exhibitors.

One of the most intriguing of the new exhibitors is Liquavista, a spinoff from Philips launched in April, which is developing products using electrowetting technology for portable displays. First shown at SID 2004 by Philips, electrowetting technology offers great potential for mobile displays such as cell phones, MP3 players and cameras, because the displays are extremely bright and energy-efficient. Essentially, electrowetting creates such bright displays by manipulating colored oil and water in a tiny cell with electric currents. According to Liquavista, "the technology's manufacturing processes are highly compatible with the established liquid-crystal manufacturing infrastructure, which will enable Liquavista to bring its products to market quickly and allow manufacturers to develop high-value-added products with little capital addition to their existing plant. Liquavista is developing relationships with the existing LCD supply chain and OEMs to bring to market the first innovative products." Liquavista's new products can be seen at SID 2006 in Booth 926.

Other exhibitors of note at SID 2006 include:

  • LG.Philips LCD (LPL) (Booth 932) will showcase its 100-in. TFT-LCD panel for full HD LCD TVs, the world's largest LC display. The 100-inch LCD features LPL's proprietary copper-based interconnect technology enabling high-definition picture quality without distorting the video signals. LPL says that the display has a maximum contrast ratio of 3000:1, a response time less than 5ms, and 180-degree viewing angle, among other benefits.

  • eMagin Corp. (Booth 744) will showcase its latest OLED breakthrough, which it claims is the world's highest luminance and longest lifetime OLED microdisplays. In April, eMagin announced the first four products in its OLED-XL™ microdisplay portfolio, which it claims offers up to 410,000 hours luminance life, the widest temperature range, and the lowest power requirement of any commercially available SVGA resolution microdisplay system. This large efficiency increase permits OLED-XL displays to be capable of much higher luminance without any added power consumption.

  • Corning (Booth 330) will unveil its new environmentally friendly, EAGLE XG™ substrate that will assist panel makers in meeting increasingly stringent environmental regulations. Corning claims this is the first LCD substrate to be completely free of heavy metals. Corning will also show its Generation 8 substrates, the newest large size glass for the LCD industry, which will be commercially available by the third quarter.

  • Cree Inc. (Booth 1540) will be showing its Colorwave LED backlighting solution, which it believes will mark the beginning of a second generation of LED backlighting. A prototype was shown at SID 2005, but the company says the design has been improved and now it offers a complete LED backlighting solution, consisting of: the LED light source, integrated heat management, reference driver electronics, interconnection method and reflecting optics. Cree claims it has solved some of the problems associated with LED backlights, including BLU thickness, weight, heat and power consumption. The Colorwave solution is the same thickness as CCFL, around the same power consumption as CCFL, and still offers all the benefits of LED backlighting demonstrated in the first generation: It is mercury-free, and has a wider color gamut and longer lifetime.

For the third consecutive year, the German Pavilion, sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Economy and organized by the German Flat Panel Display Forum (DFF), will be at SID, featuring 13 companies from the German flat-panel-display (FPD) industry.

In addition, some 38 companies will take part in the Exhibitors' Forum from Tuesday, June 6 through Thursday, June 8. Participating companies will deliver 15-minute presentations on their products, offering greater detail than might be available on the exhibition floor.

The SID 2006 Exhibition will take place Tuesday June 6 through Thursday, June 8 as part of the SID 2006 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition. For a complete list of exhibitors and an interactive floor plan of SID 2006, visit www.sid2006.org and click on "Exhibition." This page also contains more information on the participants of the Exhibitors' Forum.

JSID Listed in Thomson's Science Citation Index Expanded

The Journal of the Society for Information Display (JSID) can now be found listed on Thomson Scientific's Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), a major subscribers-only index and database used heavily by universities and other academic institutions. JSID is now listed as a part of Thomson's ISI Web of Science®, which calculates an up-to-date Impact Factor for each publication listed in SCIE based on the number of citations. This is an accepted metric for gauging the importance of a publication and also of the individual papers published in it.

This is an important turning point for JSID, according to the Journal's Editor, Dr. Andras Lakatos, because many academic institutions around the world acknowledge or credit scientific publication records based exclusively on papers that appear in SCIE-listed publications. Therefore, JSID's listing in the SCIE should expand the Journal's reach to academic researchers who may have refrained from submitting manuscripts in the past when JSID was not listed, Lakatos said.

JSID is the only monthly scientific journal that is devoted 100 percent to the science and technology of displays and display-related developments in materials, electronics and imaging. It is published in full color and is available online at http://sid.aip.org/jsid.

For more information on Thomson's SCIE, visit http://www.isinet.com.
