SID 2006 Keynote Session to Feature
Executives from LG.Philips LCD, Matsushita, Qualcomm
Executives from three major display-industry companies-LG.Philips
LCD, Matsushita and Qualcomm-have been confirmed as the
keynote speakers at the SID 2006 International Symposium,
Seminar and Exhibition. The speakers will cover a broad range
of topics, ranging from liquid-crystal displays (LCDs), to
plasma display panel (PDP) technology, to portable displays.
Always one of the highlights of the annual SID Symposium,
the Keynote addresses will take place on Tuesday, June 6 from
8:30 to 10:30 a.m.
Following the opening remarks by SID officials, the first
speaker, Bock Kwon, Executive Vice President of
Marketing and Sales for LG.Philips LCD, will discuss
how consistent technological innovation will continue to drive
LCD industry growth, specifically LCD TV, in his talk
entitled, "A Perspective on the TFT-LCD Industry."
Next up, Dr. Takeshi Uenoyama, Director of the
Advanced Technology Research Laboratories and Image Devices
Development Center at Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.
Ltd., will explore plasma-display-panel (PDP) technology,
products and business strategies from Panasonic's perspective
in his speech, "Large-Size FPD-The Driving Forces for
Real Life Viewing Experience at Home."
The final keynote speaker will be Dr. Paul E. Jacobs,
CEO of Qualcomm Inc. In his talk, "A Revolution in
Display Technology: Enabling Next-Generation Wireless
Communications," Jacobs will address how mobile devices
will transform the way we work and play through the year 2010
and describe the opportunities and challenges presented by
today's display technology.
SID 2006 will take place June 4-9 at the Moscone Center in
San Francisco, California, USA. For more information on any
element of SID 2006, visit www.sid2006.org.
Astronaut Olsen to Deliver "Out of
This World" Luncheon Speech at SID 2006
The annual luncheon at the SID 2006 International
Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition promises to be a
star-studded affair. That's because Dr. Gregory H. Olsen,
Ph.D., who was just the third private citizen to orbit the
Earth aboard the International Space Station, has been
confirmed as the 2006 luncheon speaker.
Olsen completed 150 orbits of the Earth and traveled almost
4 million weightless miles during his 10-day space voyage in
October 2005. Olsen paid $20 million for the privilege of
being a passenger on a Russian Soyuz rocket as it brought a
new crew to the International Space Station.
Olsen worked as a research scientist at the RCA Labs (Sarnoff
Center) form 1972-1983. He developed vapor phase epitaxial
crystal growth of optoelectronic devices, including laser
diodes and photodetectors for fiberoptic applications based on
the material indium gallium arsenide (InGaAs). Olsen has 12
patents and over 100 technical papers to his name, is an IEEE
LEOS Fellow and the first recipient of the prestigious IEEE
Aron Kressel award.
In 1984, Olsen founded EPITAXX, a fiber-optic detector
manufacturer together with Vladimir Ban. It was sold in 1990
for $12 million. In 1992, he founded Sensors Unlimited, a
near-infrared camera manufacturer, with Marshall Cohen.
Sensors was sold to Finisar Corp. for $600 million in 2000,
repurchased by the management team in 2002 for $6 million,
then sold again to Goodrich Corp. in 2005 for $60 million.
Currently, he is president of GHO Ventures in Princeton, NJ
where he manages his "angel" investments, South
African winery, Montana ranch, and performs numerous speaking
engagements to encourage children-especially minorities and
females-to consider careers in science and engineering. He is
active in the New Jersey Technology Counsel (NJTC), NJTC
Venture Fund, IEEE and the NJ Commission on Science and
Technology.
This year's luncheon will take place Wednesday, June 7 at
noon. In addition to the speech by Olsen, the luncheon will
also feature the announcement of the 2006 SID/Information
Display magazine Display of the Year Awards, the
industry's most prestigious honor. More than 100 products were
nominated for the 2006 Display of the Year Awards, and the six
winners will be revealed at the luncheon.

2006 Business Conference Program
Finalized
More than a dozen top display industry executives will
offer their insights on the ever-changing display marketplace
at the 2006 SID Business Conference, which will take place
Monday, June 5 and Tuesday, June 6 as part of the 2006 SID
International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition at the Moscone
Center in San Francisco.
"We're in a very dynamic period in the display
industry, so having updates on how the market is doing has
great value in itself," said Conference Chair Aris
Silzars. "But in addition to that, we're trying to bring
in new speakers and new perspectives, and striving to feature
a cross-section of the display industry, so it should be of
high interest to past attendees as well as new ones."
This is the fourth year for the SID Business Conference,
which was expanded to two days in 2005. Silzars hopes that the
combination of the exciting slate of speakers with SID 2006's
location in tech-savvy San Francisco, will attract 1,000
attendees to this year's Business Conference.
The Business Conference will kick off on Monday, June 5
with a talk by Bob O'Donnell, Vice President of Clients and
Displays, International Display Corp., entitled "Beyond
the Silver Box: Overcoming Commoditization." O'Donnell
will take a forward-thinking look at what it will take to be
successful in the increasingly crowded flat-panel TV
marketplace, touching on major issues confronting the
industry, such as LCD vs. Plasma, 1080p resolution,
"smart" TVs, and more.

On June 5, Mary Lou Jepsen, Chief Technology Officer at the
One Laptop per Child Nonprofit Association, will offer a
special luncheon discussion on the organization's goal of
creating $100 laptops for children in rural and developing
areas. Following the completion of the program on June 5,
Samsung will sponsor a networking reception.
The Business Conference will close on Tuesday, June 6, with
what promises to be a lively debate between SID
President-Elect and former Plasmaco President Larry Weber and
Samsung LCD Business Vice President Brian Berkeley. Entitled
"And the Winner Is…", the discussion will aim to
settle the issue of which of the current display technologies
will be the ultimate winner in the marketplace.
The Tuesday session of the Business Conference will be
conducted jointly with the SID Investors Conference, which
will take place June 6-7. Those registered for the Business
Conference will be able to attend all Investors Conference
functions on Tuesday, June 6, and all Investors Conference
attendees will be able to attend the Business Conference
sessions on June 6. The agenda for the Investors Conference
has yet to be finalized, though it will start with an
Investment Banker Panel lunch discussion on June 6.
