Reminder: SID 2006 Late News Abstracts
Still Being Accepted
It's not too late to submit Late News papers for
presentation at SID 2006. The Society will accept Late News
abstracts through January 20, 2006.
SID had received approximately 660 paper submissions for
the 2006 Symposium by the initial deadline for abstracts and
technical summaries in early December, and the SID '06 Program
Committee is expecting a total of around 700 by the Late News
deadline. Last year's conference saw the technical symposium
extended from three days to four after a record-high 450
papers were accepted for oral and poster presentations. SID
2006 organizers anticipate that a similar number of papers
will be accepted for this year's Symposium.
The Society will consider papers addressing any of the
Symposium's 12 topics: Active-Matrix Devices, Applications,
Applied Vision/Human Factors, Display Electronics, Display
Manufacturing, Display Measurement, Display Systems, Emissive
Displays, FEDs and CRTs, Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs),
Projection Displays, and Liquid-Crystal and Other Non-Emissive
Displays.
To download the Final Call for Papers, which contains more
specifics on these categories as well as instructions for
submission, visit www.sid.org/conf/sid2006/call.pdf.
The SID 2006 International Symposium, Seminar and
Exhibition will take place June 4-9 at the Moscone Center in
San Francisco, California, USA. For more information, visit www.sid2006.org.
SID 2006 Business, Investors Conferences
Still Accepting Presenters
Since its inception in 2003, the SID
Business Conference has become a mainstay at the annual SID
Symposium, attracting 644 attendees at SID 2005 in Boston.
According to Conference Chair Aris Silzars, the 2006 SID
Business Conference, which will be part of the 2006
International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition in San
Francisco, will feature all-new topics and presentations,
focusing on the incredible growth and changes in the worldwide
display business, with the goal of attracting the largest and
strongest audience in the Conference's history.
Silzars reports he is currently screening
potential speakers from a strong slate of interested
presenters, and only those with the strongest qualifications
and highest level of expertise will be invited to participate
at the 2006 Business Conference. The Business Conference is
designed to provide executives, entrepreneurs, program
managers, marketers, investment analysts and other
professionals in all sectors of the electronic
information-display industry with an unparalleled
comprehensive view of every aspect of the business, from
technology tradeoffs, to market and business dynamics.
Silzars adds that while slots on the
program are filling up quickly, he will consider potential
speakers with a high level of expertise on the business of
displays who have a unique perspective to share with Business
Conference attendees. If you are interested in presenting and
believe you bring a singular viewpoint to this area, contact
Silzars at silzars@attglobal.net.
In addition, SID '06 will also feature the
SID 2006 Investors Conference, after a successful debut at SID
2005 in Boston. The Investors Conference, co-sponsored by
investment firm SG Cowen & Co., allows public and private
display companies to present themselves to a broad audience of
financial professionals, including securities analysts,
portfolio managers, individual investors,
mergers-and-acquisitions specialists, venture capitalists and
display-company executives.
The 2006 Investors Conference program is
quickly being filled as well, but Conference Chair Elliott
Schlam will still entertain pitches from qualified, interested
presenters who can offer a one-of-a-kind outlook to this
specialized audience. If you are interested, contact Schlam
via e-mail at eschlam@aol.com.
Reminder: Deadline for 2005 Display of
the Year Awards Nominations is December 31
The last two weeks of 2005 mark the final chance to send in
nominations for the 11th SID/Information Display Magazine
2005 Display of the Year Awards (DYAs), the industry's most
prestigious awards. To be eligible, a product must have been
introduced and been commercially available at some time
between November 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005, which is also
the deadline for submitting nominations.
The awards categories have been tweaked for the 2005 DYAs.
Gold and Silver awards will be handed out in each of the
following three categories:
Display of the Year Award
This award is granted for a display with novel and outstanding
features such as new physical or chemical effects, or a new
addressing method. Examples of appropriate nominations are:
LC, plasma or OLED displays; bistable displays; or HDTV
displays with novel means of rendering fast-moving images.
Display Application of the Year Award
This award is granted for a novel and outstanding application
of a display, where the display itself is not necessarily a
new device. Examples of appropriate nominations for this
category are: a camera with a display used as a viewfinder; a
display used as an electronic book; a mobile phone with a
display or displays used for still or moving images; or a
novel projection system with known display components.
Display Component of the Year Award
This award is granted for a novel component that has
significantly enhanced the performance of a display. A
component is sold as a separate part destined to be
incorporated into a display. A component may also include
display-enhancing materials and/or parts fabricated with new
processes. Examples of appropriate nominations in this
category are: a polarizer, an electrophoretic laminate, or an
LED used as a backlight.
To nominate a product, component or application for a 2005
Display of the Year Award, visit www.sid.org/awards/dya.html
and download the nomination form. The forms must be completed
entirely (including supporting documentation) and submitted by
December 31, 2005. Complete instructions for submitting
nominations are provided on the Web site.
The 2005 DYAs will be announced and presented at the 2006
SID International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, which
will take place June 4-9, 2006 in San Francisco. For more
information on the conference, visit www.sid2006.org.
IDRC 2006 Seeks Paper Submissions
The 26th International Display Research Conference (IDRC),
which will take place Sept. 18-21, 2006, at the Liquid Crystal
Institute at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, has
published its first Call for Papers. Papers in all areas of
display research will be considered for presentation at IDRC
2006. The deadline for paper submission is May 10, 2006.
The conference will feature a technical conference,
workshops on flexible displays and an introduction to display
technology, and evening programs that will include a look at
the pioneers of display research at the RCA labs.
In addition, conference attendees will have the opportunity
for lab-based author interviews and technology discussions,
and an open-house tour of the Liquid Crystal Institute.
To view the call for papers, which includes instructions on
abstract submissions, please visit www.sid.org/conf/idrc2006/call.pdf.

LEDs In Displays
One Day Technical and Business Conference
Organized by SID LA Chapter
January 13, 2006
Costa Mesa, California
SID's Los Angeles chapter will host a one-day focused
technical and business conference on the use of LEDs in
displays. The conference will take place on January 13, 2006,
at the Costa Mesa Country Club in Costa Mesa, California.
The conference will examine the state of the art and
fundamentals of high-brightness LEDs and non-imaging optics (NIO);
provide background for further technical papers that will
cover the latest information in the use of LEDs (white &
RGB) in applications with: micro to large-scale
non-emissive displays. Display applications that will be
covered include microdisplays (goggles to RPHDTVs/LCoS to MEMS),
LCDs (from small-diagonal color STN to large-screen AMLCD
panels with expanded color gamut); and direct view and
projection, including color field-sequential imaging (CSFI).
