SID Inaugurates New Chapter in Latin America

SID has proudly extended its reach into Latin America with the launch of the Latin America chapter of the Society. In September, the Latin America chapter, which covers all Latin American countries, got off the ground with a four-day kickoff conference in Brazil, drawing 183 attendees from the chapter's 21 member nations.

The Latin America chapter, SID's 27th worldwide, was formed with the hope that collaboration with other SID chapters around the world would help industry professionals in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries connect to researchers, seminars and technical papers available through SID, according to SID Secretary Dr. Munisamy Anandan and SID San Diego Director David Eccles, who were both on hand at the inaugural meeting in Brazil.

"Advances in technology are important to the future economic success for the Latin American countries, and collaboration with SID members worldwide will help them to make rapid progress beyond what they could do all by themselves in research fields as well as manufacturing," Eccles explained.

The Latin America chapter's officers are located in Campinas, Brazil, he added, which will serve as its quasi-headquarters and will most likely be the initial location for upcoming conferences. The chapter's first conference, held from Sept. 26-30, included lectures on LED and OLED backlights for LCDs and LCD monitor system design. The conference also featured interactive workshops in which attendees were able to help make their own LC panels.

In addition, SID is also in the process of inaugurating its 28th worldwide chapter in Israel. No further details are available about the Israel chapter at this time.

ADEAC 2005 Shows Strong Growth in Second Year

The second annual Americas Display Engineering & Applications Conference (ADEAC), held last month in Portland, Ore., saw its attendance jump nearly 50 percent when compared to the inaugural event in 2004. ADEAC '05 had 524 attendees come to Portland to hear presentations and check out the exhibits that covered all segments of the display applications industry; the first ADEAC in 2004, which took place in Fort Worth, Texas, attracted 367 attendees.

"The quality and timeliness of the seminars and technical programs was better than you can get at any other North American conference," said Conference Chair Steve Atwood. "The growth in overall attendance to over 500 people shows that the display community recognizes the importance of ADEAC, and I look forward to leading the ADEAC '06 organizing committee."

More than 250 display professionals attended the 23 technical sessions, which covered areas such as measurements and standards, systems, backlights, projection, emerging technologies, portable displays and human factors. Nearly 100 people also attended the tutorials, which offered a comprehensive overview of current display technologies.
The exhibit hall featured 48 display companies, representing a 55 percent increase from 2004. Exhibitors were happy with the turnout and with the business they were able to conduct.

"We absolutely found the SID ADEAC conference worthwhile this year," said Richard Webster, Director of Business Development for LCD Lighting, which also exhibited at ADEAC '04. "In addition to potential new contacts and/or business opportunities, it is equally beneficial to see numerous current customers in the same place, thereby saving both travel expenses and the time it takes to visit each one. Furthermore, we had the opportunity to connect with our fellow display-industry associates on a much smaller scale … to both monitor the technology as well as exchange ideas on current and future trends."

Planning for ADEAC 2006 is already under way. The dates and location, which will most likely be somewhere on the East Coast, are expected to be announced by mid-December.

Reminder: SID 2006 Abstracts Deadline Set for This Week

The deadline for abstract submissions for the SID 2006 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition is coming up this week. Those wishing to offer an abstract for SID 2006 must do so by December 1, 2005.

SID 2005 saw the technical symposium extended from three days to four after a record-high 450 papers were accepted for oral and poster presentations. SID 2006 organizers are expecting to receive 700 papers for consideration, and that about 450 will be accepted for presentation.

The Society will consider papers addressing any of the Symposium's 12 topics: Active-Matrix Devices; Applications; Applied Vision/Human Factors; Display Electronics; Display Manufacturing; Display Measurement; Display Systems; Emissive Displays; FEDs and CRTs; Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLEDs); Projection Displays; and Liquid-Crystal and Other Non-Emissive Displays.

To download the Final Call for Papers, which contains more specifics on these categories as well as instructions for submission, visit www.sid.org/conf/sid2006/call.pdf.

The SID 2006 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition will take place June 4-9 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California, USA. For more information, visit www.sid2006.org.

Reminder: Nominations Being Accepted for 2005 Display of the Year Awards

Don't forget to send in your nominations for the 11th SID/Information Display Magazine 2005 Display of the Year Awards (DYAs), the industry's most prestigious awards. To be eligible, a product must have been introduced and been commercially available at some time between November 1, 2004 and December 31, 2005.

The awards categories have been tweaked for the 2005 DYAs. Gold and Silver awards will be handed out in each of the following three categories:

Display of the Year Award
This award is granted for a display with novel and outstanding features such as new physical or chemical effects, or a new addressing method. Examples of appropriate nominations are: LC, plasma or OLED displays; bistable displays; or HDTV displays with novel means of rendering fast-moving images.

Display Application of the Year Award
This award is granted for a novel and outstanding application of a display, where the display itself is not necessarily a new device. Examples of appropriate nominations for this category are: a camera with a display used as a viewfinder; a display used as an electronic book; a mobile phone with a display or displays used for still or moving images; or a novel projection system with known display components.

Display Component of the Year Award
This award is granted for a novel component that has significantly enhanced the performance of a display. A component is sold as a separate part destined to be incorporated into a display. A component may also include display-enhancing materials and/or parts fabricated with new processes. Examples of appropriate nominations in this category are: a polarizer, an electrophoretic laminate, or an LED used as a backlight.

To nominate a product, component or application for a 2005 Display of the Year Award, visit www.sid.org/awards/dya.html and download the nomination form. The forms must be completed entirely (including supporting documentation) and submitted by December 31, 2005. Complete instructions for submitting nominations are provided on the Web site.

The 2005 DYAs will be announced and presented at the 2006 SID International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, which will take place June 4-9, 2006 in San Francisco. For more information on the conference, visit www.sid2006.org.

December 6-9, 2005
Sunport Takamatsu, Takamatsu, Japan

The 12th International Display Workshops/Asia Display 2005 (IDW/AD '05) will take place December 6-9, 2005 in Sunport Takamatsu, Takamatsu, Japan.
