Information for Authors
Scope: The Journal of the SID (Journal)
publishes original works dealing with the theory and practice
of information display. Coverage includes materials, devices
and systems; the underlying chemistry, physics, physiology and
psychology; measurement techniques, manufacturing
technologies; and all aspects of the interaction between
equipment and its users. Review articles are also published in
all of these areas.
Occasional special issues or sections consist of
collections of papers on specific topical areas or collections
of full length papers based in part on oral or poster
presentations given at SID sponsored conferences.
Editorial Process:
All manuscripts submitted are reviewed by at least two
reviewers expert in the subject matter of the manuscript, to
assure novelty, accuracy and the appropriate application of
scientific and technologic methods. Authors are encouraged to
be brief, but not incomplete; effective communication of your
ideas is essential.
The Journal is published in English. The Editors
will help only with minor revisions in English, a manuscript
may be rejected if it requires major rewriting in English.
Manuscript Categories:
Papers are normally 6-10 published pages,
but longer papers will be considered also. (Assume 900
words/page, with a figure consuming 200 words and a displayed
equation 40 words). Each paper must include an abstract of 200
words or less.
Letters may be preliminary results, short reports on
completed work, comments on material published previously, or
notices of errors (errata). Letters should be 2500 words or
less, and should be preceded by a 50-word abstract (not
required for comments or errata). Attempts will be made to
publish letters more rapidly than regular papers.
Comments on another author's work will be sent to
him or her so that a reply can be published along with the
comment.
Manuscript submission:
Submission of a manuscript amounts to the assurance that it
has not been published or accepted for publication elsewhere,
that it is not under consideration elsewhere, and that it will
not be submitted elsewhere while it is considered for
publication in this Journal. Prior publication
does not include abstracts or short papers published in not
peer-reviewed conference proceedings, but it is expected that
the paper submitted to the Journal will expand in scope and or
in detailed content the presentation made or published at the
conference.
Where to Submit your Manuscript. After April
1, 2006 all manuscripts are to be submitted online using JSID-Peer
X-Press, located at http://jsid.peerx-press.org.
Prior to submitting a manuscript an author has to log in at http://jsid.peerx-press.org,
register and obtain a password. The author needs to have the
following information ready for this online registration:
- For each author:
- first name, middle initial, and last name; also
title (e.g., Dr., Prof.)
- o order of appearance in the list of
authors
- o e-mail address
- o primary (work) telephone
number
- o primary (work) fax number
- o postal address, including department and
institution
- Full title of the manuscript
- Abstract of the manuscript (less than 200 words)
- Subject-matter key words for the manuscript
- Suggested and/or excluded reviewers (include name,
e-mail address, and institution)
- Required Electronic files
(properly prepared) for:
- cover letter (will
be accessible to editors only, not to reviewers)
This required cover letter has to inform the
Editor whether the manuscript is submitted as a
regular paper or contributed to a special section
of Journal. If it is contributed to Special
Section, then please give the title of the Special
Section it is contributed for.
- manuscript text
only (acceptable formats are Microsoft Word, or
WordPerfect)
- illustrations (one
file for each cited figure number; acceptable
formats are JPEG or TIFF) they have to be separate
files not embedded in the manuscript
- list of captions
for each figure and table
- brief biographies (acceptable
formats are MS Word or WordPerfect) and photos of
the authors (acceptable formats are JPEG or
TIFF)
- Optional electronic files:
- manuscript with embedded illustrations in
PDF file format
- supplemental material to aid the
reviewers (including auxiliary document, figure,
and table files)
- multimedia files (including datasets,
audio and video files)
Author instructions are available through a link after you
successfully log into JSID.Peer X-Press. After
registering and submitting information and files, you may use
JSID.Peer X-Press to check on the status of your manuscript
throughout the peer review process.
Authors having any problems with logging into JSID.Peer.X-Press
or if the have any questions should contact JSID Editorial
Staff by e-mail sent to jsidedstaff@sid.org.
Exceptions are manuscripts submitted during 2006
for publication in a Topical Special Section. These should be
sent in by e-mail or on a CD-ROM directly to the Guest Editor
identified in the advertisement for that Special Section.
Format:
All text should be double spaced on 8-1/2 x 11-in.
(preferred) or A4 size page format. Use only Latin or Greek
letters and Arab or Roman numerals. The resolution of line art
as well as halftones should be at least 600 dpi. Photographs
should be 400 dpi.
Title and Abstract Page: The address and affiliation
of each author should be included. The up to 200 words
abstract should be a concise statement of objectives, methods
results and conclusions of the work. Below the abstract should
be a brief list of keywords.
Style: The Journal generally follows the
style specified by the American Institute of Physics. Please
consult the AIP Style Manual, Fourth Edition Copyright
© 1990-1997 American Institute of Physics
http://www.aip.org/pubservs/style/4thed/toc.html.
Fonts: The Journal prefers the use of the
following fonts: Helvetica, Times or Times Roman
Units: Metric (SI) units are strongly preferred.
English units may be used parenthetically, e.g., 120 Cd/M2 (35
fL).
Figures and Tables may be embedded in the text, but
they should be also included in one or more separate files.
Every illustration and table is to be identified in the
submitted manuscript, e.g., Fig. 1, Table 1.etc. Each figure
should have 600 dpi resolution when reproduced in 3in width.
Figure and table captions should be presented as a
complete list, starting on a separate page, even if they are
also included with the figures. Captions should be
sufficiently clear that the figures can be understood without
reference to the paper text. The axes of graphs should have
self-explanatory labels. Units must be stated on the axes,
elsewhere on the graph, or in the caption.
Equations: Number equations consecutively with
Arabic numbers.
References: All manuscripts published in the Journal
are to be fully referenced. The Journal is a
cross-referenced publication, therefore it is vital, that all
references adhere to the standards published by the American
Institute of Physics (AIP) or the Institute of Electrical and
Electronic Engineers (IEEE). References should be typed
starting on a separate page and should be double-spaced. They
must include authors' names, paper title, journal or book, and
pages.

and numbers, or marketing or promotional phrases that in any
way are associated with the subject of the paper. Similarly,
the names of the sponsoring commercial, academic, or
governmental organizations may not be used in the body or the
text. These items may be included in footnotes, references, or
acknowledgments if they are necessary to improve communication
of the scientific or technical results to the readers, or if
the sponsor requires that the author acknowledge such
sponsorship. Exceptions are made when authors use trade or
product names to describe substrates, other display
components, display materials, or manufacturing or test
equipment used during the course of the research work reported
on. The Editors will, however, review all these exceptions and
may disallow them if they violate the original intent of this
policy.
Color:
All manuscripts are published in full color. The use of
color is encouraged throughout the article, especially in
figures, tables and photographs.
Copyright and page charges:
Copyright: it is the policy of the Society to
own the copyrights to all the material it publishes. You will
be provided with a copyright transfer form, which must be
completed before publication is scheduled. Authors and
employers retain full rights to the use of their own material.
Authors are responsible for obtaining clearance to use any
copyrighted material in their paper, and written authorization
for such use must be provided before the paper is published.
You are also responsible for identifying and acknowledging any

Voluntary page charges: After a contribution has
been accepted for publication, the author's company or
institution will be requested to pay a voluntary charge of
$120
per published page to cover part of the cost of publication.
Page charges for the Journal, like those for the journals of
other professional societies, are not obligatory, nor are
their payment a prerequisite for publication. However, they
should be considered as part of the normal cost of doing
research and development. Authors who pay the voluntary page
charges will receive 100 reprints of their article in full
color as a special benefit.
