Proper Reference Format
SID is currently working to
improve the impact factor of our archival journal, the Journal
of the Society for Information Display, by encouraging authors
to include citations to the Journal when appropriate. When you
are writing your symposium digest papers, very often it would be
possible to include a citation to a relevant J. Soc. Info.
Display paper as part of the reference list. We would strongly
encourage you to consider the Journal as a primary reference
source as you are writing your paper for the SID Symposium
Digest. Appropriate citations to the Journal of the Society for
Information Display will enhance the status of the Journal and
the status of the Society as well. Please use the example
citation formats in the above template as standards.

Title
Center the paper title in a single column across the top of
the first page in 14-pt bold type. Capitalize the first letter
of the first and last words of the title of all other words in
the title except articles (a, an, the), conjunctions (and,
but, or, for,…), and prepositions (of, to, in, on,…).
Author Names
Begin a new line, with a 6-pt space before, below the title.
Type author names in 12-pt bold italic. Group authors by
affiliation.
Affiliation
Follow each group of authors with the group's affiliation,
on a new centered line, in 10-pt bold type, with no extra space
before. Affiliation includes the name of the authors'
institution and the city, state, and country in which it is
located. Additional groups of authors follow after the
affiliation of the first group, with a 6-pt space before. Add a
12-pt space after the last affiliation.
Abstract
After the paper title, author names and affiliations, all of
which appear in a single full-width column, begin formatting the
page in two columns. Put the heading "Abstract,"
flush-left, on the first line, in 12-pt bold type. Immediately
below, place an abstract, of 35 to 50 words, in single-spaced
italic type.
Sections
Begin each section of the body of the paper with a
sequentially-numbered heading, set flush left in 12-pt bold
type. Follow the heading number with a period. Put a 0.5-in
(1.27?cm) tab between the heading number and the text of the
heading. Use the same capitalization rules for the text of the
heading as those given above for the paper title.
Subsections
To divide a section into smaller blocks, use subsections.
Outline-number subsection headings, set flush left in 11-pt bold
type. Put a 0.5-in (1.27?cm) tab between the heading number and
the text of the heading. Subsections in, for example, section
two would be numbered 2.1., 2.2., …
Subsubsections
Outline-number subsubsection headings, set flush left in
11-pt italic type. Follow the subsubsection number with a period
and 0.5-in (1.27?cm) tab before the heading text. Subsubsections
in, for example, section 2.2 would be numbered 2.2.1., 2.2.1.,
…
Body
The body of the paper is in 9-pt single-spaced type. Put a
4-pt space after each paragraph. Paragraphs are without
indentation, and are justified (flush right and left). Use a
single space after periods and colons.
Figures and Tables
Place tables and figures close to their first reference in
the text. Wide figures and tables may extend across both columns
to a maximum width of 17.8 cm (7 inches) if they are either at
the top or bottom of the page. Accompany each figure or table
with a caption in 9-pt bold. Separately number figures
consecutively. Begin each caption with the spelled-out word
'Figure' or 'Table,' and follow with the item number and a
period. Begin the caption text on the same line. Center the
caption immediately below a figure and immediately above a
table. Long, multi-line captions may be justified rather than
centered. Separate captions from the figure or table, and from
adjacent body text, by 4?pt spaces. In the body text refer to
figures and table with the spelled out word, e.g. Figure 1 or
Table 3.
Equations
Long equations should be displayed on their own line,
centered, and separated from adjacent body text by 6-pt spaces
above and below. Number displayed equations sequentially with an
Arabic numeral set flush right within parentheses.
Acknowledgements
Acknowledge technical and financial support in this separate
section, placed after the body of the paper, but before the
references section.
Reference and citations
Cite references in a sequentially numbered list of endnotes,
numbered in order of their first appearance in the body of the
paper. The endnotes should be in the last section of the paper,
the section numbered in sequence with the other sections, and
headed 'References.' Compose endnotes in 9-point type,
single-spaced, ragged right, with a 4-pt space after each. Begin
each note with the reference number in brackets (like [1]).
Indent notes 0.25 inch (0.6 cm) from the left by, with the first
line having a 0.25-in (0.6 cm) hanging indent and a 0.25-in (0.6
cm) tab between the bracket numeral and citation text. Follow
the style of the American Institute of Physics for the various
types of references, (see http://www.aip.org/pubservs/style/4thed/sec2.pdf)
but include the paper in quotation marks after the authors'
names (or use citations from a recent issue of the Journal of
the Society for Information Display as examples). In the text
refer to citations by the bracketed citation number.
Reference only published
materials accessible to the public. Internal technical reports
may be cited only if they are easily accessible (i.e. you can
give the address to obtain the report within your citation) and
may be obtained by any reader. Proprietary information may not
be cited. Private communications should be noted in the body of
the text, e.g., [Robertson, personal communication], rather than
being listed in the References.
