SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION DISPLAY (SID)
HONORS 2009 AWARD RECIPIENTS FOR EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO
DISPLAY TECHNOLOGY
SAN JOSE, Calif., April 23, 2009-The Society for
Information Display (SID), the leading global organization
dedicated to the advancement of electronic-display technology,
today unveiled the recipients of its prestigious 2009 honors
and awards for outstanding contributions to the display
industry. SID seeks to reward key technology contributors that
have taken innovative approaches to display technology and/or
have made outstanding contributions for improving and
advancing the display industry at large. Winners will be
officially honored at an awards banquet, which will be held
during SID's annual International Symposium, Seminar and
Exhibition (Display Week 2009), which runs Sunday, May 31
through Friday, June 5, 2009 at the Henry B. Gonzalez
Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
SID Honors and Awards Committee Chair Chris King notes,
"Despite the global economic downturn, display technology
continues to be a hot-bed for mounting innovation. These award
recipients represent the world's most renowned display
scientists who have contributed countless hours of hard work
and brilliant innovation, laying the foundation for the future
of information display technology. We are proud to acknowledge
their amazing talents and contributions, as it is their
achievements that continue to break new ground and advance the
technology into new territories and regions."
2009 SID Honors and Awards Recipients:
- The Jan Rajchman Prize recognizes outstanding
scientific or technical achievement in, or contribution
to, research on flat panel displays. This year, the
prestigious Jan Rajchman Prize is awarded to Dr. Peter
Raynes, Chair of Optoelectronics at Oxford University,
for his pioneering work in twisted nematic liquid
crystal displays, and in recognition of his
distinguished publication record over the years.
- Recognized for his outstanding contributions to the
education and training in the field of displays, Dr.
Ernst Lueder, University of Stuttgart, is awarded this
year's Slottow-Owaki Prize. While now retired, Dr.
Leuder is commended for his many contributions as an
outstanding and inspiring teacher, scientist and mentor
for the active matrix display community. Specifically,
he has authored a book for SID, is an internationally
recognized authority on active matrix TFTs, and was a
driving force for the establishment of an active-matrix
display research center at the University of Stuttgart.
- This year's Lewis and Beatrice Prize goes to Peter
Baron, ABCD Technology, who is recognized for his many
years of innovative, tireless and outstanding service to
the Society from its inception in 1962, including his
distinctive service to SID in numerous local and
international positions.
The SID Fellow distinction is awarded to individuals who
have made a widely recognized and significant contribution in
advancing the display industry. This year's winners span the
globe and include key executives from major display leaders as
well as up-and-coming companies. The recipients of the 2009
Fellow Awards are:
- Amal P. Ghosh, Vice President of R&D, eMagin
Corp.;
- Min-Koo Han, Professor, School of Electrical
Engineering, Seoul National University;
- Sang Soo Kim, Samsung Fellow and Executive Vice
President, Samsung Electronics;
- Jun H. Souk, Technology Advisor, Samsung Electronics,
LCD Division;
- Sashiro Uemura, General Manager, Noritake Co., Ltd.,
and Director, Noritake Itron Corp.;
- John Zhong, Senior Manager for Display and Touch
Engineering at Apple, Inc.
SID is also honoring individuals with Special Recognition
Awards for their distinguished contributions, including
outstanding technical accomplishments, contributions to
literature, and service to the Society. This year's Special
Recognition Awards are presented to:
- Byung-Chul Ahn, Vice President and Head of Advanced
Technology for LG Display;
- Peter Bocko, Chief Technology Officer, East Asia,
Corning, Inc.;
- Hideo Hosono, Professor, Tokyo Institute of
Technology;
- Gary W. Jones, Executive, Nanoquantum Corp.;
- Hiro Kikuchi, Institute for Materials Chemistry and
Engineering, Kyushu University;
- Temkar Ruckmongathan, Scientist, Raman Research
Institute in Bangalore
The awards banquet will take place on Monday, June 1, 2009
at 8:00 p.m. in Salon I of the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel. For
