THE SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION DISPLAY ROUNDS UP IMPRESSIVE SLATE OF SPEAKERS, SESSIONS FOR DISPLAY WEEK 2009 IN SAN ANTONIO

Display Leaders to Highlight the Wide Range of Technologies Under Development in the Electronic-display Arena

CAMPBELL, Calif., March 17, 2009-The Society for Information Display (SID), the leading global organization dedicated to the advancement of electronic display technology, today unveiled the keynote addresses and preliminary symposium program for Display Week 2009 - the 47th annual SID International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition - May 31 through June 5, 2009. To be held in San Antonio, Texas, the display industry's premier annual event corrals the display industry's top minds and leaders from around the world-and based on this year's line-up, promises once again to show the world where electronic displays are heading.

"The depth and variety of the topics to be covered at Display Week 2009 showcase work that's being done leveling every segment of the display industry," said SID President Dr. Paul Drzaic. "We are seeing advancements in areas such as 3-D, flexible and touch technologies that wouldn't even have been thought possible a decade ago. Moreover, as established technologies mature, scientists and engineers are finding novel ways to extend their value, creating an exciting environment that fosters innovation, encourages creativity and offers unique development opportunities."

The keynote addresses, to be presented Tuesday, June 2, 8:30-10:30 a.m., will serve as the kickoff to the Symposium portion of Display Week. While varied in topic, all three of this year's talks center on taking a look into the future of key display technologies, from mainstream to emerging and bleeding-edge. The distinguished keynote speakers for 2009 are Dr. In-Jae Chung, executive vice president and chief technology officer of LG Display, Korea; Dr. Yasuhiro Takaki, associate professor for the Institute of Symbiotic and Technology at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology; and Mr. Martin Jackson, vice president of technology for the Cambridge Technology Center at Plastic Logic.

As the acknowledged mainstream display technology, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are working to maintain their advantage as the most cost-effective source of high-quality displays. Manufacturers of LCDs are working hard to extend this advantage through improvements in performance and features. In his keynote, "LCD's Future Opportunities with New Technologies," Chung will discuss technological solutions, such as low-resistance copper bus lines and advanced in-plane switching (IPS) technology that can help meet the response-time, driving-rate and resolution-rate requirements for next-generation displays. He will also delve into touch interfaces, three-dimensional (3-D) displays, viewing angle control, and other technologies and applications that may help ensure LCDs' future viability.

A hot topic at Display Week 2008, 3-D displays continues to garner interest as the display industry strives to advance their commercialization. Titled "3-D Displays: Present and Future," Takaki's keynote will present an overview of current 3-D display techniques. The development of a natural 3-D display that would solve the problems associated with traditional 3-D displays, such as visual fatigue and jerky motion parallax, is important for future widespread use of the technology, according to Takaki. Super multi-view and high-density displays are natural 3-D candidates, he says, and deems holographic displays ideal, but they require extremely high resolution. Takaki will report on these options, as well as the latest research trends into realizing a commercially feasible holographic display.

Jackson's talk, "2010: The Plastic Electronics Display Revolution Begins with eReaders," will hone in on polymer semiconductors and their readiness, after 20 years of R&D, to change the face of active-matrix displays. Jackson will share how Plastic Logic is addressing new market opportunities spurred by advancements in digital content, ubiquitous smart phones, a publishing industry in search of transformative business models, and Plastic Logic's own groundbreaking, enabling plastic electronics technologies in a new eReader product.

The four-day Display Week Symposium will feature 68 sessions of invited and contributed papers, including more than 260 peer-reviewed oral presentations and more than 180 interactive presentations in the poster session-addressing such leading-edge topics as organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays, touch interfaces, green technology, flexible displays, 3-D displays, pico projectors, advanced television systems, and "electronic skin" technology, to name a few. The 12 tracks into which the presentations are divided include:

* Active-Matrix Displays
* Applied Vision and Human Factors
* Display Applications
* Display Electronics
* Display Manufacturing
* Display Measurement
* Display Systems
* Emissive Displays
* Field-Emission Displays
* Liquid-Crystal Technology
* Organic LEDs
* Projection Displays

Two key trends that will be addressed by a number of Symposium papers are the parallel efforts being put into sustaining LCDs and growing OLED displays. Novel approaches to reduce the cost of manufacturing LCDs, long the dominant display technology, will be discussed in papers by experts at companies such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Asahi Kasei EMD and Nakan Corporation. On the other side of the aisle, a number of papers focus on conventional and emerging OLEDs, as they seek to displace LCDs' market-leading position. Presenters from Kodak, DuPont, Samsung SDI, Sony and others will disclose innovative techniques with the potential to advance OLEDs' cause. This is one shootout you won't want to miss!

Display Week 2009 will take place Sunday, May 31 through Friday, June 5, 2009 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas. Display Week is the premier international gathering of scientists, engineers, manufacturers and users in the field of electronic information displays. For more information, visit www.sid2009.org.
