SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION DISPLAY (SID) ANNOUNCES 2008 HONORS
AND AWARDS RECIPIENTS FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO
ADVANCING THE DISPLAY INDUSTRY
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 11, 2008-The Society for
Information Display (SID), the leading global organization
dedicated to the advancement of electronic-display technology,
today unveiled the recipients of its prestigious 2008 honors
and awards for outstanding contributions to the display
industry. Specifically, SID seeks to reward key technology
contributors that have taken innovative approaches to display
technology and/or have made outstanding contributions for
improving and advancing the display industry at large. Winners
will be officially honored at an awards banquet, which will be
held during SID's annual International Symposium, Seminar and
Exhibition (Display Week 2008), which runs Sunday, May 18
through Friday, May 23, 2008 at the Los Angeles Convention
Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
SID's Honors and Awards Committee Chair, Chris King,
comments, "The display industry continues to advance due
to the brilliant master minds behind the technology. This
year, we again celebrate the world's most prestigious group of
display scientists-recognizing these very deserving
individuals for their contributions in raising the display
technology bar to yet another level. They truly demonstrate
the leadership and fuel behind the display industry's global
proliferation. In fact, several of this year's award
recipients are located throughout Asia and Europe-signifying
not only the expanding notoriety and prestige associated with
these awards around the world, but also our recognition of the
far-reaching constituency helping further the advancement of
this dynamic sector."
This year, special recognition goes out to SID Fellow
Professor Tatsuo Uchida, who currently serves as dean of the
Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University. Dr.
Uchida is the winner of the prestigious Slottow-Owaki
Prize,
which debuted last year, for his remarkable contributions to
the education of students and company researchers in the field
of liquid-crystal displays. Of noteworthy significance is the
fact that Dr. Uchida is a two-time winner of a major SID
Award. Specifically, he was the 2004 recipient of the Jan
Rajchman Prize.
Another notable award recipient is renowned industry
veteran Dr. Richard Williams, who receives SID's 2008
outstanding technical achievement award, the Karl Ferdinand
Braun Prize, for the pioneering discovery of a significant
electro-optic effect in liquid-crystal materials and the
recognition of its importance to flat-panel displays.
Heralded for outstanding contribution to display research
is Dr. Shin-Tson Wu, from the University of Central Florida,
who receives the Jan Rajchman Prize for his exceptional
contributions to liquid-crystal display science and
technology, especially display device physics, electro-optic
effects and materials.
The Otto Schade Prize goes this year to Dr. Louis D.
Silverstein, of VCD Sciences, Inc. Dr. Silverstein is being
recognized for his many contributions to the enhancement of
display performance and image quality, including pioneering
efforts in integrating display technology with color science.
The SID Fellowship distinction is bestowed to individuals
who have made a widely recognized and significant contribution
in advancing the display industry. The recipients of the 2008
Fellow Awards are:
- Dr. Vladimir Chigrinov, Professor, Department of Electrical
and Electronic Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science
and Technology;
- Dr. Ingrid Hyendericks, Research Fellow for Visual
Experiences at Philips Research Laboratories, and part-time
Professor at the University of Delft and Southeast University
of Nanjing;
- Dr. Chishio Hosokawa, Research Manager for the Electronics
Materials Development Center, Idemitsu Kosan Company Ltd.;
- Dr. Junji Kido, Professor, Department of Organic Device
Engineering at Yamagata University;
- Dr. Seung Hee Lee, Professor, School of Advanced Materials
Engineering at Chonbuk National University; and
- Mr. Richard McCartney, Chief Display Technologist, National
Semiconductor
SID is also honoring individuals with Special Recognition
Awards for their distinguished contributions, including
outstanding technical accomplishments, contributions to
literature, and service to the Society. This year, Special
Recognition Awards are presented to:
- Mr. Kimio Amemiya, General Manager, Plasma Panel
Development Division, Pioneer Corporation;
- Dr. Alan Jacobsen, Technical Fellow in Human Factors
Engineering for Flight Deck Design, The Boeing Company;
- Dr. Sungkyoo Lim, Professor, Department of Electronics
Engineering at Dankook University;
- Dr. Hiroyuki Mori, Senior Research Manager for Flat Panel
Display Materials Research Laboratories, Fujifilm Company;
and,
- Dr. Kiyoshi Yoneda, Vice President, Kodak Japan Ltd.
The awards banquet will take place on Monday, May 19 at 8
p.m. at the Golden State Room of the Wilshire Grand Hotel Los
