SOCIETY FOR INFORMATION DISPLAY (SID) ANNOUNCES 2008 HONORS AND AWARDS RECIPIENTS FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO ADVANCING THE DISPLAY INDUSTRY

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 11, 2008-The Society for Information Display (SID), the leading global organization dedicated to the advancement of electronic-display technology, today unveiled the recipients of its prestigious 2008 honors and awards for outstanding contributions to the display industry. Specifically, SID seeks to reward key technology contributors that have taken innovative approaches to display technology and/or have made outstanding contributions for improving and advancing the display industry at large. Winners will be officially honored at an awards banquet, which will be held during SID's annual International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition (Display Week 2008), which runs Sunday, May 18 through Friday, May 23, 2008 at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

SID's Honors and Awards Committee Chair, Chris King, comments, "The display industry continues to advance due to the brilliant master minds behind the technology. This year, we again celebrate the world's most prestigious group of display scientists-recognizing these very deserving individuals for their contributions in raising the display technology bar to yet another level. They truly demonstrate the leadership and fuel behind the display industry's global proliferation. In fact, several of this year's award recipients are located throughout Asia and Europe-signifying not only the expanding notoriety and prestige associated with these awards around the world, but also our recognition of the far-reaching constituency helping further the advancement of this dynamic sector."

This year, special recognition goes out to SID Fellow Professor Tatsuo Uchida, who currently serves as dean of the Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University. Dr. Uchida is the winner of the prestigious Slottow-Owaki Prize, which debuted last year, for his remarkable contributions to the education of students and company researchers in the field of liquid-crystal displays. Of noteworthy significance is the fact that Dr. Uchida is a two-time winner of a major SID Award. Specifically, he was the 2004 recipient of the Jan Rajchman Prize.

Another notable award recipient is renowned industry veteran Dr. Richard Williams, who receives SID's 2008 outstanding technical achievement award, the Karl Ferdinand Braun Prize, for the pioneering discovery of a significant electro-optic effect in liquid-crystal materials and the recognition of its importance to flat-panel displays.

Heralded for outstanding contribution to display research is Dr. Shin-Tson Wu, from the University of Central Florida, who receives the Jan Rajchman Prize for his exceptional contributions to liquid-crystal display science and technology, especially display device physics, electro-optic effects and materials.

The Otto Schade Prize goes this year to Dr. Louis D. Silverstein, of VCD Sciences, Inc. Dr. Silverstein is being recognized for his many contributions to the enhancement of display performance and image quality, including pioneering efforts in integrating display technology with color science.

The SID Fellowship distinction is bestowed to individuals who have made a widely recognized and significant contribution in advancing the display industry. The recipients of the 2008 Fellow Awards are:

  • Dr. Vladimir Chigrinov, Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology;
  • Dr. Ingrid Hyendericks, Research Fellow for Visual Experiences at Philips Research Laboratories, and part-time Professor at the University of Delft and Southeast University of Nanjing;
