SID 2006 Organizers Expect Record Attendance Thanks to
Biggest, Best Symposium Program in Event's History
SAN JOSE, Calif., March 29 - Organizers of the Society for
Information Display (SID) 2006 International Symposium,
Seminar and Exhibition (SID 2006) expect this year's event to
be the biggest and best in the organization's 44-year history.
SID 2006 will take place June 4-9 at the Moscone Center in San
Francisco, California.
SID 2006 officials are optimistic that overall attendance
at SID 2006 will exceed 8,000 people, which would be a record
for the Society's signature event. They cited several reasons
for their confidence, including the show's location in the
tech-savvy San Francisco Bay Area. But the most important
factor they pointed to is the unprecedented number of oral and
poster papers accepted for the Technical Symposium, the
centerpiece of the six-day event that is the premier
international gathering in the electronic information-display
industry.
"This is the most impressive program I have seen in
all the years that I have been attending SID," said Dr.
Amal Ghosh of eMagin, who is the Program Chair for SID 2006.
"The extraordinary number of papers is exceeded by their
quality, and represents the tremendous increase in interest in
the display industry worldwide."
A record 540 oral and poster papers have been accepted for
presentation at SID 2006. This led conference organizers to
maintain the four-day format for the Symposium that was hugely
successful when initiated at the 2005 Symposium in Boston.
"We continue to see a rapid pace of innovation across
all segments of the display industry," added Dr. Wei Chen
of Apple Computer Inc., SID 2006's General Chair. "Our
attendees will be dazzled by the latest advances in display
technology that will be reported at SID 2006."
Here are some brief highlights of the SID 2006 Symposium
program, broken down by technology segment:
OLEDS: With 13 of the 70 technical sessions at the
Symposium, organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) represent the
largest single technology concentration at SID 2006. Sessions
will focus on OLED device structures, active-matrix (AM)OLEDs,
OLED manufacturing, materials, and blue-emitting OLEDs.
Notable OLED papers will cover flexible AMOLEDs on
stainless-steel substrates (one paper each by Samsung SDI and
Universal Display Corp.), and white OLEDs (Novaled GmbH).
LCDs: Motion blur is a hot topic in the
liquid-crystal-display (LCD) arena, and the subject will be
explored in 2 sessions, with noteworthy papers from Philips,
Fuji Photo Film and Samsung Electronics. Other areas of
interest in LCDs include Vertical-Alignment (VA)-Mode LCD
(notable papers from Samsung and Hannstar), LC Projection
(Kent State and North Carolina State universities) and LCD TVs
(Samsung and Hitachi).
Plasma Displays: There are 6 sessions devoted to
plasma displays. Notable papers will be given in the areas of
Plasma TV by Samsung and Pioneer; Plasma-Display Driving by
the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo;
Plasma-Display Cell Structures from Kyungpook National
Univeristy in Korea; and Plasma-Display Protecting Layers by
Samsung SDI.
Backlights: Environmental, cost and performance
pressures have pushed the issue of backlights to the forefront
of the display industry. Four sessions will explore the
subject, with notable papers from Sharp Laboratories of
America on Power Savings in Backlights, National Chiao Tung
University of Taiwan on LED Backlights, and Innolux Display
Corp. on Dual-Light Sources for Backlights in LCDs.
FEDs: In 2006, for the first time in the Symposium's
history, no cathode-ray-tube (CRT) papers will be presented.
In their stead are 3 field-emission-display (FED) sessions,
focusing on the promise of this emerging technology. Papers of
note will be given by Asahi Glass Co., Noritake Co., CEA
Grenoble-LETI, Samsung SDI and Motorola.
These are a few of the major topics to be covered during
the SID 2006 Symposium; other subjects of note include
Projection Displays (5 sessions), Display Manufacturing (4
sessions), 3-D Displays (3 sessions), Flexible Displays (2
sessions), and Electronic Paper (2 sessions). The SID 2006
preliminary program can be viewed at www.sid.2006.org.
The 44th Annual SID International Symposium, Seminar and
Exhibition will take place Sun., June 4 through Fri., June 9
at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. It is the
premier international gathering of scientists, engineers,
manufacturers, and users in the field of
electronic-information displays. For exhibitor information,
