Tenth-Annual Display of the Year Awards
Announced Live at SID Symposium for First Time
BOSTON, May 24-For the first time in their 10-year history,
the 2004 Display of the Year Awards, the most prestigious
awards in the display industry, were announced live today
during the Keynote Session at the Society for Information
Display (SID) 2005 International Symposium, Seminar and
Exhibition at Boston's Hynes Convention Center.
In previous years, the awards, which honor outstanding
achievement in the display industry in three
categories-Display of the Year, Display Product of the Year,
and Display Material or Component of the Year-were unveiled
months before the SID Symposium in Information Display (ID)
Magazine. The Awards were then presented during the
Symposium's Keynote Session each May.
"Moving the announcement to the SID Symposium has
created the excitement and interest that these outstanding
achievements deserve," explained Dr. Ernst Lueder, chair
of the Display of the Year Awards Committee (DYAC), which is
sponsored by SID and ID Magazine. "These award
winners represent the pinnacle of the display industry, and it
is only right that they are honored during its premier
event."
To be considered for a 2004 award, candidate products had
to have their commercial introductions between July 1, 2003
and October 31, 2004. To qualify for next year's Display of
the Year Awards, candidate products will need to have their
commercial introduction between November 1, 2004 and October
31, 2005.
The DYAC members considered many factors in their
deliberations, including technical innovation, commercial
significance and likely social impact, and bestowed Gold and
Silver awards in each of the three categories. For complete
descriptions of these products and why they were selected,
please see the May 2005 issue of ID Magazine. The 2004
Display of the Year Award winners are as follows:
Display of the Year
Gold Award: LG.Philips LCD LC550W01-A5 LCD Module
The DYAC presented the 2004 Display of the Year Gold Award to
LG.Philips LCD for developing the first commercially available
thin-film transistor liquid-crystal display (TFT-LCD) module
for television sets in the mid-50-in. range, and for
addressing the challenges of designing large TFT-LCD modules
for television applications with a variety of innovative
technologies.
Silver Award: Nemoptic BiNem® Bi-Stable LCD
Nemoptic has developed a bi-stable variation on the classic
supertwisted nematic (STN) LCD, so the technology is
compatible with existing STN manufacturing lines. Nemoptic's
black-and-white, VGA version of the display currently being
manufactured and integrated into eBooks by Nemoptic licensee
Picvue earned Nemoptic the 2004 Display of the Year Silver
Award.
Display Product of the Year
Gold Award: Sony LIBRIé eBook
Sony has reinvigorated the eBook category by integrating a
bi-stable, electrophoretic, "electronic paper"
display from the team of E Ink and Philips into its LIBRIé
eBook. The DYAC bestowed Sony Corp. with the 2004 Display
Product of the Year Gold Award for incorporating novel display
technology in the design of an eBook that is more appealing to
consumers, and which brings the eBook closer to fulfilling its
potential.
Silver Award: Motorola RAZR V3 Cell Phone
From its anodized aluminum case that is only 13.9 mm thick and
an all-up weight of only 95 grams, to the chemically etched
keypad created from a single sheet of nickel-plated copper
alloy, the two state-of-the-art displays, and its long list of
features, Motorola's RAZR V3 is as sleek as it is stunning.
For raising the ubiquitous cellular telephone to new levels of
elegance and functionality, the DYAC honored Motorola with the
2004 Display Product of the Year Silver Award.
Display Material or Component of the Year
Gold Award: E Ink Microencapsulated Electrophoretic
Front-Plane Laminate (FPL) for Paper-Like Displays
For substantial innovation in the science and technology of
electrophoretic front planes, E Ink Corp. won the 2004 Display
Material or Component of the Year Gold Award. E Ink solved a
number of difficulties with electrophoretic displays and,
working with partner Philips, has commercialized a display
that exhibits two levels of gray in addition to black and
white, with all levels being stable when power is removed.
Silver Award: Lumileds Luxeon LED Module for Backlights
For pioneering practical LED backlight modules for
liquid-crystal displays, the DYAC presented the 2004 Display
Material or Component of the Year Silver Award to Lumileds
Lighting LLC.
