Expanded Business Conference, New Investors Conference
Highlight Inaugural Business Enterprise at SID 2005

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 16 - The Society for Information Display (SID) announced today that it has launched the SID Business Enterprise as an integral part of its 2005 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition. The SID Business Enterprise, which will take place Monday, May 23 through Wednesday, May 25, will be composed of two elements: an expanded, two-day Business Conference (May 23 and 24) and a brand-new Investors Conference (May 25).

"This Enterprise will provide executives, entrepreneurs, program managers, marketers, investment analysts and other professionals in all sectors of the rapidly growing electronic-display industry with an unparalleled comprehensive view of every aspect of the industry, from technology tradeoffs, to market and business dynamics, to equity capital issues," explained Business Enterprise Chair Elliott Schlam.

Event organizers expanded the 2005 Business Conference after seeing attendance at the 2004 Business Conference nearly double from 2003, to 709 people. Attendees also expressed a desire for more time to interact with presenters; such time has been built into the expanded 2005 Business Conference.

"We will hit several new areas, such as inorganic LED (light-emitting diode) technology as it applies to displays, and more on OLEDs (organic LEDs), than we have done in the past," said Aris Silzars, Chair of the Business Conference. Several presentations will look at the future of Generation 10 LCD (liquid crystal display) factories, he added.

The opening address on Monday, May 23 will be delivered by H. B. Chen, president and COO of AU Optronics Corp. of Taiwan, one of the world's largest LCD manufacturers. He will discuss the future of LCDs, with an emphasis on Taiwan's role.

Some of the other notable presentations at the 2005 Business Conference will include:

  • A discussion by Allen Alley, CEO of Pixelworks Inc., on past, present and future growth in the display industry, with emphasis on the key role of electronics for image enhancement. (Monday, May 23)

  • Dr. Jun Souk, executive vice president of Samsung Electronics, will present his vision of how LCDs will become more economically viable from his perspective as one of the world's leading experts on LCD manufacturing. (Monday, May 23)

  • Dr. Larry F. Weber, former president and CEO of Plasmaco, a subsidiary of Matsushita, will explain how and why the economics, performance and operating lifetime of plasma displays meets or exceeds that of LCDs. Dr. Weber is one of the world's leading experts on plasma-display technology. (Monday, May 23)

  • David Fyfe, CEO of Cambridge Display Technology, which recently completed an IPO, will discuss the lessons learned and the "value" of OLEDs from both the display-product and Wall Street perspectives. (Tuesday, May 24)

  • Bruce Berkoff, executive vice president of marketing for LG.Philips LCD Inc., will address how TFT (thin film transistor)-LCD manufacturers will leverage their technology strengths to prepare for the coming ubiquity of flat-panel displays in digital homes, businesses, automobiles and other applications. (Tuesday, May 24)

  • Thomas E. Holder, senior strategic investment manager for Intel Capital, will share Intel's perspective on, and role in, display investing. (Tuesday, May 24)

The inaugural SID Investors Conference will take place on Wednesday, May 25. Co-sponsored by international investment-banking firm S.G. Cowen & Co. LLC, the Investors Conference will feature corporate presentations from leading public and private display companies, primarily geared to securities analysts, portfolio managers, investors, mergers-and-acquisitions specialists, venture capitalists, investment bankers and display-company executives. The program is still in the process of being finalized. Any company interested in presenting at the Investors Conference should contact William Klein at bill@sid.org immediately. For more on S.G.
