SID/ID Display
of the Year Awards to Be Announced at SID 2005;
Nomination Deadline Extended to November 15
Norwalk, Connecticut, October 18,
2004 - The winners of the next SID/Information Display
magazine Display of the Year Awards - the display industry's
most prestigious awards - will be announced at the SID '05
Symposium being held in Boston, May 22-27, 2005, where the
awards will be presented. The awards will be described in detail
in the June issue of Information Display.
This is a major change from the
past, when the awards were first announced in the December issue
of Information Display and in other publications, and
then officially presented to the winners at the SID Symposium
five months later. "We anticipate that this change will
focus more attention on the presentation of the awards at the
SID Symposium, and that much more excitement will surround the
presentation, which is appropriate for our industry's most
prestigious and valued awards," said Ernst Lueder, Chair of
the Display of the Year Awards Committee. As a further
attraction during the awards ceremony, the winners will
highlight the special features of their award winning
products.
The awards, sponsored by the
Society for Information Display and Information Display
magazine, are major awards in the international information
display industry - the industry responsible for designing and
manufacturing the displays that give life to television sets,
notebook computers, desktop computer monitors, stadium displays,
point-of-sale terminals, cell phones, portable media players,
and many other electronic devices.
Because the winners will now be
announced five months later than before, a later deadline for
nominations is possible. The new deadline is November 15. For
the current year, to accommodate the change in dates, there will
be an extended qualification period during which nominated
products must first appear on the market. That period is July 1,
2003 to October 31, 2004. For next year's awards, the
qualification period will be November 1, 2004 to October 31,
2005.
The DYA winners are selected by
an international committee consisting of leading members of the
technical display community and distinguished technology
journalists, a combination that ensures the committee's
deliberations are carried out with both technical sophistication
and a broad perspective. Recent winners of the awards, which are
presented in several categories, include LG.Philips LCD for its
UXGA TFT-LCD panel made with copper bus lines; Mitsubishi
Electric Corporation for its large-screen rear-projection
monitor in a package less than a foot deep; Eastman Kodak for
the first commercial product incorporating a full-color,
active-matrix OLED display; Universal Display Corp. and PPG
Industries for a new generation of red and green phosphorescent
OLED materials with very high efficiency; and NXT for its
SoundVu® Distributed Mode Loudspeaker technology, in which
actuators on the periphery of a panel turn the entire panel into
a speaker that produces high-quality, stereo sound.
The announcement and presentation
of the awards will be made during the SID 2005 Keynote Session
to be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston,
Massachusetts, on the morning of Tuesday, May 24, 2005.
