International Display
Workshops Moves to Niigata, the "Water City," for 2004
October 14, 2004 - The 11th
International Display Workshops (IDW) will be held December 8-10
at the new Niigata Convention Center (Toki Messe) in Niigata,
Japan. The Workshops, sponsored by the Society for Information
Display (SID) and the Institute of Image Information and
Television Engineers (ITE), constitute one of the major
international display technology conferences on the annual
calendar.
Niigata, 300 km north of Tokyo,
is located where the Shinano and Agano rivers empty into the Sea
of Japan. In 1858 the city was one of the "five ports"
authorized to conduct trade with the outside world; in 1996 it
was designated a "core urban city" by Japan's central
government, which gives it more power and autonomy than most
other cities in Japan. Niigata prides itself on its efforts to
preserve its traditional culture, natural environment, and
distinctive local character, and on its citizens' spirit of
hospitality and community.
The first IDW Keynote Address is Displays:
Past, Present and Future by R. W. G. Hunt (Colour
Consultant, U.K.). Hunt, formerly Assistant Director of Research
at Kodak Research Laboratories in Harrow, England, is now an
independent consultant. He is widely regarded as an unusually
lucid, insightful, and entertaining speaker.
The second Keynote is Digital
Broadcasting Technologies: TV for the 21st Century by K.
Enami (NHK, Japan). Enami is a distinguished contributor to the
field of television broadcasting technology at NHK, one the
world's preeminent television research laboratories.
IDW's major invited addresses are
Ubiquitous Displays for Ubiquitous Computing by H.
Nakashima (Future Univ., Hakodate, Japan), and Research and
Development of E-Books by M. T. Johnson (Philips Research
Labs., The Netherlands).
The technical program will
consist of 11 workshops on the following display and human
factors topics: Liquid Crystal Science and Technologies; Active
Matrix Displays; FPD Manufacturing, Materials and Components;
CRTs; Plasma Displays; EL Displays; LEDs and Phosphors; Field
Emission Displays; Organic LED Displays; 3D/Hyper-Realistic
Displays and Systems; Applied Vision and Human Factors; and
Projection and Large-Area Displays, and their Components. In
addition, there will be a special Topical Session on Electronic
Paper covering electronic paper, paper-like displays, and
rewritable paper. The presentations in the topical session will
cover concepts, hardware, software, materials, human interfaces,
systems, applications, and overviews.
A banquet and reception will
encourage conversation and networking; and there will be an
exhibition of display devices, manufacturing equipment,
measuring instruments, software systems, and materials for
display technologies. The exhibitions at IDW tend to be
informal, and discussions at exhibitors' booths are encouraged.
