Be Held Jointly with IMID to Form Largest Display Conference
Ever Held in Korea
May 16, 2004 -
The 24th International Display Research Conference (Asia Display
'04) and the 4th International Meeting on Information Display (IMID
'04) will be held jointly from August 23 to 27, 2004 at the
Exhibition & Convention Center (EXCO) in Daegu, Korea. The
combined event, co-organized by the Society for Information
Display (SID) and the Korean Information Display Society (KIDS),
is expected to draw over 2000 attendees, which will make it the
largest displays meeting ever held in Korea, said Program Chair
Jin Jang (Kyung Hee University).
Creating a
significant international event was an important goal for the
organizers, and a major driver for combining the two meetings.
"I would like to express my sincere thanks to the
organizing-committee members who made special efforts to make
[this] a successful global meeting," said Asia Display/IMID
'04 Conference Chair S.W. Lee (Samsung Electronics). "We
will pay special attention to making Asia Display/IMID '04 a
fruitful and joyful conference and exhibition."
During the
five-day event, recent progress in all aspects of display
research, engineering, manufacturing, and applications will be
presented, said Lee. In particular, the conference will cover
FPD manufacturing technologies, market analyses, active-matrix
displays, liquid-crystal technologies, organic
light-emitting-diodes, PDPs, and carbon-nanotube FEDs.
The keynote
speakers are Alex Gruzen, Senior Vice President and General
Manager, Mobile Computing, at Hewlett-Packard Company (Palo
Alto, California) and Hirotoshi Matsuda, President and CEO of
NEC-Mitsubishi Electric Visual Systems (NMV) in Tokyo. Invited

Colorado), Piero Migliorato (Cambridge Univ.), John West (Kent
State Univ.), Jeremy Burroughes (CDT), P.J. Bos (Kent State
Univ.), Alexander Smirnoff (Belarusian State Univ.), and Y.
Nakajima (Sony).
On August 23,
tutorial workshops will be held at the Hotel Inter-Burgo in
Daegu, with a star-studded list of speakers. In LCDs, the
speakers will be T. Uchida (Tohoku Univ.), E. Lueder (Univ. of
Stuttgart), and O. Lavrentovich and P. J. Bos (Kent State
Univ.). H. Tolner (consultant, formerly of Philips), H. Uchiike

Tokyo), and C. Summers (Georgia Inst. of Technology) will cover
PDPs. H. Meng (DuPont), H. Antoniadis (OSRAM), O.K. Kwon (Hanyang
Univ.), H.K. Chung (Samsung SDI), and M. Hack (Universal Display
Corp.) will speak on OLEDs, and D. Mentley (iSuppli/Stanford
Resources) and P. Boynton (NIST) will cover markets and
standards.
A substantial
exhibition of display components and systems is being organized
by the Electronic Display Industrial Research Association of
Korea (EDIRAK). To exhibit, contact Young Dae Choi by e-mail at cyd@edirak.or.kr
or through EDIRAK's website at www.edirak.or.kr.
Several
significant awards will be presented at Asia Display/IMID '04,
among them the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology's award
for outstanding contributions in original technology and Merck
Advanced Technologies' award for original contributions to
liquid-crystal technology and distinguished contributions to LCD
technology.
In addition to
hosting Asia Display/IMID '04, Daegu is the third largest city
in South Korea and is located in an area that is rich in
history, culture, and scenery. Palgong-san Mountain, located at
the northern part of Daegu, attracts millions of tourists each
year with Donghwa-sa Temple, Gatbawi (Stone Buddha on the
mountain peak), and other Buddhist temples. Yangnyeong-si (a
traditional herbal medicine market) is located within the city,
as is Deuran-gil (a street for dining) and many parks and
entertainment areas.
Gyeongju City,
the ancient capital of the Silla Dynasty (57 BC to 935 AD), is
within an hour's drive to the east of Daegu. It is full of
cultural assets, including the splendid Seokgul-am Grotto and
Bulguk-sa Temple, which have been designated as World Cultural
Assets by UNESCO. Andong City, the home of Korean Confucianism,
is also easily accessible, within an hour's drive to the north.
The famous Dosan-seowon Confucian Academy, founded in the
Choseon Dynasty, and the rustic Hahoe Folk Village have been
highly praised by visitors. For Asia Display/IMID '04 program,
registration, and hotel information, see http://www.k-ids.or.kr/e_main.htm
