Computer
Graphics Legend Alvy Ray Smith to Give Luncheon Address at SID
2004
April 2, 2004 -
The SID Symposium's traditionally festive Wednesday Luncheon
will feature the legendary computer graphics innovator Alvy Ray
Smith, co-founder of Pixar, former Director of Computer Graphics
Research for Lucasfilm, founder of Altamira Software, Xerox PARC
alumnus, and winner of two Academy Awards. In his presentation
"Are We Really Here?", Smith will look at what it
takes to generate realistic images of virtual people.
The SID 2004
Luncheon, which is sponsored by Samsung Semiconductor, will be
held at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in
Seattle on May 26. It is part of the Society for Information
Display Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition, which runs from May
23 to 28 and is North America's largest trade show and technical
conference devoted to displays, display products, display
materials and components, display manufacturing, and display
applications. A record 461 exhibit booths have been sold for the
trade show thus far, according to Exhibit Sales Manager Kate
Dickie (kdickie@pcm411.com).
Display Week will
kick off with half-day short courses on Sunday May 23 and the
second running of SID's highly successful Business Conference on
Monday May 24. The Business Conference is a unique one-day event
devoted to international display business opportunities. It will
feature senior executives of leading display-related companies
from around the world, and a luncheon panel of investment
bankers, securities analysts, and venture capitalists. The
Business Conference keynote speaker is Bruce Berkoff (EVP,
LG.Philips LCD), whose topic is "Flat, Digital, and
Resolution that Will Knock Your Socks Off: The Future of
Display."
Also on Monday is
a program of 90-minute seminars. The seminars, which continue on
Friday May 28, include OLED Manufacturing (by OLED co-inventor
Steve VanSlyke of Kodak), Flexible Displays (Gregory Crawford,
Brown University), and Display Electronics (David Fish, Philips
Research Laboratories).
A multi-track
program of technical symposium papers, exhibits, applications
tutorials, and special events held from Tuesday May 25 to
Thursday May 27 will provide designers, manufacturers,
marketers, and integrators of displays with rewarding choices,
whatever their technical interests. More than 35 invited papers
will anchor the technical sessions, which contain over 350
papers. Among the invited papers are "Development of
High-Quality LCD-TV" (M. Shigeta, Sharp Corp.) and
"What Is Electronic Paper?: The Expectations" (M.
Omodani, Tokai University).
The technical
program begins on Tuesday morning with keynote addresses by
Richard Rashid (SVP, Microsoft Research), Johan van de Ven (CTO,
Philips Mobile Display Systems), and Dong-Hun Lee (EVP, Samsung
Electronics AMLCD Division). This year, the SID/Information
Display magazine Display of the Year Awards will be presented
immediately following the Keynote Session, which will allow
demonstrations of the winning products to be part of the
presentation.
