Rashid, van de Ven, and Lee to Present
Keynotes at SID 2004
Keynote Session embraces the present and
future of displays as seen by Microsoft, Philips, and Samsung
March 15, 2004 - The Keynote Session for SID 2004, which will
be held at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in
Seattle from May 23 to 28, brings together three senior
executives from three very different companies - all of which
are intensely involved with displays. SID - the Society for
Information Display Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition - is
recognized as the international display industry's leading
event, and the exhibition is the largest show devoted to
displays in North America.
The Keynote Session will be opened by Richard F. Rashid
(Senior Vice President, Microsoft Research) with Peering into
the Future through the Looking Glass of Technology. He will
look at how changes in processors, software, storage, graphics,
and communications will change the way people interact with
computers - and how display technology has a critical role to
play. Then, in Picturing Tomorrow...New Perspectives Enabled
by New Technology, Johan van de Ven (CTO, Philips Mobile
Display Systems and Communications Businesses) will paint a
picture of the different human environments that can evolve in
the future, and how they can impact the ways displays are
perceived and used.
Dong-Hun Lee (Executive Vice President, Samsung Electronics
AMLCD Division), will explain the structure of Samsung and
Sony's much-discussed $2 billion joint venture for making TFT-LCD
panels. Lee's address, TFT-LCD - Continuous Investment Drives
Exponential Growth, will also cover Samsung's
continuous-investment strategy.
Display Week will kick off with half-day short courses on
Sunday May 23 and the second running of SID's highly successful
Business Conference on Monday May 24. The Business Conference is
a unique one-day event devoted to international display business
opportunities. It will feature senior executives of leading
display-related companies from around the world, and a luncheon
panel of investment bankers, securities analysts, and venture
capitalists.
Also on Monday is a program of 90-minute seminars. The
seminars, which continue on Friday May 28, include OLED
Manufacturing (by OLED co-inventor Steve VanSlyke of Kodak),
Flexible Displays (Gregory Crawford, Brown University), and
Display Electronics (David Fish, Philips Research Laboratories).
A multi-track program of technical symposium papers, exhibits,
applications tutorials, and special events held from Tuesday May
25 to Thursday May 27 will provide designers, manufacturers,
marketers, and integrators of displays with rewarding choices,
whatever their technical interests. More than 35 invited papers
will anchor the technical sessions, which contain over 350
papers. Among the invited papers are "Development of
High-Quality LCD-TV" (M. Shigeta, Sharp Corp.) and
"What Is Electronic Paper?: The Expectations" (M.
Omodani, Tokai University). A record 461 exhibit booths have
been sold thus far, said Exhibit Sales Manager Kate Dickie.
