SID Symposium
Heads for Seattle as Display Industry Prospers
January 19, 2004
– The Society for Information Display will hold its Annual
Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition at the Washington State
Convention & Trade Center in Seattle from May 23 to 28,
2004. SID 2004 will be held at a time when makers of
liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) and plasma display panels (PDPs)
are running their plants at full capacity and are enjoying firm
prices. The symposium is recognized as one of the international
display industry’s leading events, and the exhibition is the
largest show devoted to displays, display components, and
display products in North America.
Display Week will
kick off with half-day short courses on Sunday May 23 and the
second running of SID’s highly successful Business Conference
on Monday May 24. The Business Conference is a unique one-day
event devoted to international display business opportunities.
It will feature senior executives of leading display-related
companies from around the world, including Bruce Berkoff (LG.Philips
LCD), Antti Lääperi (Nokia), Thomas Edman (Applied Films),
Larry Weber (Matsushita/Plasmaco), Ross Young (DisplaySearch),
David Mentley (iSuppli/Stanford Resources), and a luncheon panel
of investment bankers, securities analysts, and venture
capitalists.
Also on Monday is
a program of 90-minute seminars, with a successful format of
tracks keyed to hot industry trends, including OLEDs, plasma,
LCDs, and projection technology. The seminars, which continue on
Friday May 23, include OLED Manufacturing (by OLED
co-inventor Steve VanSlyke of Kodak), Advances in AMLCD
Technology (Jun Souk, Samsung Electronics), Flexible
Displays (Gregory Crawford, Brown University), Display
Electronics (David Fish, Philips Research Laboratories), and
Projection Displays (George Pinho, Christie Digital),
among others.
A multi-track
program of technical symposium papers, vendor exhibits,
application tutorials, and special events held from Tuesday May
25 to Thursday May 27 will provide designers, manufacturers,
marketers, integrators, and end users of displays with rewarding
choices, whatever their technical interests. At least 25 invited
papers will anchor the technical sessions, which will contain
over 300 papers. (A record 494 papers were submitted for review
by the Technical Program Committee.) The technical program
begins on Tuesday morning with keynote addresses by Rick Rashid
of Microsoft, Johan van de Ven of Philips Components Mobile
Display Systems, and Dong-Hun Lee of Samsung Electronics.
This year, The
SID/Information Display Display of the Year Awards will
be presented as part of the Keynote Session, which will allow
demonstrations of the winning products to be part of the
presentation. The winners of this year’s Gold Awards are
LG.Philips LCD’s 20.1-inch UXGA LCD panel with copper bus
lines, Mitsubishi Electric’s ultra-thin rear-projection
display, and Universal Display Corporation and PPG Industries,
Inc.’s phosphorescent OLED material.
