International Display Workshops Move to Fukuoka for 2003; Features Special Topical Session on Electronic Paper

September 8, 2003 – The 10th International Display Workshops (IDW) will be held December 3-5 at the new Fukuoka International Congress Center in Fukuoka. The city sits on the north coast of Kyushu, the most southerly of Japan’s major islands, on scenic Hakata Bay. The Workshops, sponsored by the Society for Information Display (SID) and the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE), constitute one of the major international display technology conferences on the annual calendar.

Kyushu Island has recently been named Japan’s "PDP Island." In terms of business, culture, and industry, Fukuoka is the most active city in Western Japan. The city, having served as a gateway for the importing of continental Asian cultures into Japan since ancient times, has a rich cultural and architectural tradition. In 2000, Asia Week rated Fukuoka as the city with the best quality of life in Asia.

The Workshops’ Keynote Address will be Industrial Applications of Carbon Nanotubes by S. Iijima (Meijo Univ., NEC, AIST and JST/SORST). Among the major invited addresses will be:

  • Strategy for Electronic Display Technology in a Ubiquitous IT Environment by A. Kubota (NEDO)

  • Home Display Technology and Market Trends by Y. Yamamoto (Sony)

The technical program will consist of 11 workshops on the following display and human factors topics: Liquid Crystal Science and Technologies; Active Matrix Displays; FPD Manufacturing, Materials and Components; CRTs; Plasma Displays; EL Displays; LEDs and Phosphors; Field Emission Displays; Organic EL Displays; 3D/Hyper-Realistic Displays and Systems; Applied Vision and Human Factors; and Projection and Large-Area Displays, and their Components. In addition, there will be a special Topical Session on Electronic Paper covering electronic paper, paper-like displays, and rewritable paper. The presentations in the session will cover concepts, hardware, software, materials, human interfaces, systems, applications, and overviews.

A banquet and reception will encourage conversation and networking; and there will be an exhibition of display devices, materials, components, manufacturing and measuring equipment, and related products for display devices. The exhibitions at IDW tend to be informal, and discussions at exhibitors’ booths are encouraged.

Getting There -- Fukuoka is about five hours from Tokyo by JR Shinkansen railway. Fukuoka Airport is 1 hour 15 minutes from Kansai International Airport, and 2 hours 10 minutes from Narita International Airport by air. Access from Fukuoka Airport to the city center is convenient: Hakata JR Station, the city’s central station, is just five minutes by subway.

The Society for Information Display is an international society devoted to the advancement of display technology, manufacturing, and applications, with headquarters at 610 South 2nd Street, San Jose, California 95112; website www.sid.org.
