The First
International Conference on the Science and Technology of
Emissive Displays and Lighting Meets in November
The successor to
the International Display Phosphors Conference will take place
at the Catamaran Resort Hotel in San Diego, as did its
predecessor, but with an expanded focus on lighting, as well as
display, technology.
September 10, 2001
- The First International Conference on the Science and
Technology of Emissive Displays and Lighting will be held
November 12-14 at the Catamaran Resort Hotel in San Diego,
California. The new conference - the successor to the
International Conference on the Science and Technology of
Display Phosphors, which met successfully for six years - has
expanded its purpose to include new and exciting developments in
photonic materials, devices, and related sciences and
technologies. New topics include lighting applications,
self-assembly and nanostructures, and device physics and
processing. The international conference is sponsored by the
Phosphor Technology Center of Excellence (PTCOE), the U.S.
Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the
Society for Information Display (SID).
The conference's broadened focus
is embodied in one of the three keynote addresses, U.S.
Solid-State Lighting Initiative by A. Bergh (Optoelectronic
Industries Development Association) and J. Simmons (Sandia
National Laboratories). The other keynotes are New Display
Initiatives by Robert Tulis (DARPA) and Defense
Applications of OLED Devices by Darrell Hopper (U.S. Air
Force).
Following the Keynote Session
will be a Plenary Session entitled Phosphors for Lighting,
containing three invited papers:
"High-Power LEDs by
G. O. Mueller (LumiLeds Lighting)
"Status of Carbon
Electron-Emitting Films for Display Lighting Elements
Application by Zvi Yaniv (FEPET, Inc.)
"Organic Lighting
Technologies by A.R. Duggal (General Electric Co.)
Other technical sessions are
devoted to plasma and photonic phosphors, organic EL materials
and devices, inorganic EL materials and devices, CRT and FED
phosphors, FED thin-film materials and devices, novel FED
technologies, and phosphor synthesis. The conference is fully
international, with speakers from the United States, Japan,
Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Finland, Korea, Canada,
Russia, India, and the People's Republic of China. The
conference has been organized to maximize interaction and
discussion among the participants. In addition to the oral
sessions, there will be an evening Poster Session and a Monday
evening Beach Barbecue.

Institute of Technology, University of Georgia, University of
Florida, Pennsylvania State University, Oregon State University,
Sarnoff Corporation, and the American Display Consortium. It was
established by DARPA in 1993 to develop a world-class research
and educational program in phosphor technology and to support
the high-definition display industry with state-of-the-art
enabling technologies. It's offices are at the Georgia Institute
of Technology Manufacturing Research Center, Atlanta, Georgia
30332-0560.
The U.S. Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an agency of the U.S.
Department of Defense (DoD) dedicated to promoting advanced
technology needed to further DoD's mission.
The Society for Information
Display (SID) is an international society devoted to the
advancement of display technology, manufacturing, and
applications, with headquarters at 610 South Second Street, San
