Nobel Laureate Alan Heeger to Give Keynote Address
at Asia Display and International Display Workshops
The combination of two major display technology conferences
is expected to draw 1300 people to Nagoya in October
September 7, 2001 - Alan Heeger, winner of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Chemistry (with Alan MacDiarmid and Hideki Shirakawa) for the discovery and development of conductive polymers will give a keynote address entitled
The Plastic Electronics Revolution at the Society for Information Display's 21st International Display Research Conference (Asia Display), which is being held in conjunction with the 8th International Display Workshops from October 16 to 19 at the strikingly designed Nagoya Congress Center in Nagoya, Japan. Heeger's talk, which will review recent progress toward a "plastic electronics" technology, will be one of two that open the combined conference - called AD/IDW - on the morning of October 16. The other keynote,
Multimedia and Displays in the 21st Century by Masao Sugimoto, executive corporate engineering adviser for Pioneer, will discuss the ongoing digitalization of the media industry, and the kinds of display devices that will be required in this digital era.
"One feature of AD/IDW '01 is the integration of the nine workshops of the annual IDW with five topical sessions, with an expanded scope made possible by the unification of the two conferences," said Shohei Naemura (Merck Japan), General Chair of the conference. "We will have 421 papers and some additional late-news papers, and we are expecting more than 1300 attendees."
The 14 special sessions Naemura mentioned are the workshops on LC Science and Technologies; Active Matrix Displays; FPD Materials and Components; CRTs; Plasma Displays; EL Displays, LEDs, and Phosphors; Field Emission Displays; Large-area and Projection Displays, and their Components; and 3D/Hyper-realistic Displays and Systems; and the topical sessions on Organic EL Displays; Hardcopy and Color Science; Display Electronics; Applied Vision and Human Factors; and Displays for Intelligent Transportation Systems.
Other aspects of AD/IDW '01 will be a poster session, author interviews, a banquet and receptions to encourage conversations and networking, and two Thursday-evening invited addresses:
Carbon Nanotubes: Preparation and Physical Properties by Y. Saito of Mie University, and
Development of Paper-like Rewritable Recording Media and Systems by H. Hattori and K. Tsutsui of Ricoh. There will also be an exhibition of display devices, products, manufacturing equipment, measuring instruments, components, and materials.
Asia Display is the name for the International Display Research Conference (IDRC) when it is located in Asia. IDRC, the premier annual international conference covering fundamental technologies for advanced electronic displays, rotates between North America, Asia, and Europe (where it is called "Euro Display"). The International Display Workshops (IDW) is a major display technology conference held annually in Japan. AD/IDW '01 is jointly sponsored by the Institute of Image Information and Television Engineers (ITE) and the Society for Information Display.
The Society for Information Display is an international society devoted to the advancement of display technology, manufacturing, and applications, with headquarters at 610 South 2nd Street, San Jose, California 95112; website
