CIC9 Brings Color to The Valley of the Sun,
with an Enhanced Hardware Orientation

August 28, 2001 - The annual Color Imaging Conference (CIC) is the world's premier international technical conference for people working in the areas of color science and color engineering, and those who apply these disciplines to color products and color imaging technologies such as digital photography, image processing, color display design, data visualization, and image processing. Continuing its unbroken tradition, the conference will again be held in Scottsdale, Arizona, this year from November 6 to 9 at The SunBurst Resort Hotel. CIC9 is sponsored by the Society for Information Display (SID) and the Society for Imaging Science & Technology (IS&T).

The event kicks off on November 6 with a day of 12 tutorials and how-to workshops, including Color in Electronic Displays (Gabriel Marcu, Apple Computer), Spatial Color - Vision, Devices and Imaging (Lindsay MacDonald, Univ. of Derby), Digital Still Camera Systems (Michael A. Kriss, Sharp Laboratories of America), Color Management: The Basics (James C. King, Adobe Systems), Web Color Management (Michael Kieran, E-Color), and Mechanisms and Microstructures of Color Imaging Systems (John J. McCann and Mary A. McCann, McCann Imaging).

Beginning Wednesday, November 7, there are three days of invited and contributed presentations - again organized in a single track to encourage broad participation and discussion. Each of these three days begins with an hour-long keynote address. The keynote speakers are the esteemed color consultant Robert W. G. Hunt, Greg Ward of Exponent, and Hirohisa Yaguchi of Chiba University. Among the 30 traditionally presented technical papers are What is the Chrominance of "Gray"? (Raja Balasubramanian, Xerox), Color Imaging with JPEG 2000 (Robert Buckley, Xerox), Color Balancing Experimental Projection Displays (Maureen Stone, StoneSoup Consulting), DLP Cinema™ Technology: Color Management and Signal Processing (Brad Walker and Greg Pettitt, Texas Instruments), and Accurate Prediction of Colours on Liquid Crystal Displays (Youngshin Kwak and Lindsay MacDonald, Univ. of Derby).

In addition there will be 32 papers presented in "The Interactive Session" - up from 27 last year. Other conferences might call this a "poster session," but the organizers wish to "[encourage] a relaxed atmosphere and promote lively technical discussions between attendees and the presenters as they stand by their posters." Among the presentations are:

  • Automatic Color Correction for Ink Cartridge Variations (Chia-Lin Chu and Alp Bayramoglu, Compaq)

  • Proposal for Color Management of LCDs (Yasuhiro Yoshida and Yoichi Yamamoto, Sharp)

  • The Impact of Paper on Ink: from the Photomechanical Printer's Perspective (Carinna Parraman and Stephen Hoskins, Univ. of the West of England)

  • Answering Hunt's Web Shopping Challenge: Spectral Color Management for a Virtual Swatch (Mitchell R. Rosen et al., Munsell Color Science Laboratory, RIT)

  • The Influence of Constant Luminance on Digital Video (Jin-Seo Kim et al., CSTL/ETRI)

The color imaging conference has become the leading event where color issues and applications are discussed by people from around the world - typically over 300 people from Europe, Asia, and North America - and the conference is organized with many opportunities for conversation and informal communication.
