Microdisplays, Macro Mountains, and a View From Many Levels
In the foothills of the Rockies, MicroDisplay 2001 will present the latest technical and market developments in one of the hottest areas of display technology
June 29, 2001 -- The Second Annual International Conference and Exhibition on Microdisplays will be held at the Westin Hotel, in Westminster, Colorado, August 13-15, 2001. "This pivotal worldwide technical conference is focused on the needs of the microdisplay community. The most recent breakthroughs and new product designs will be showcased in a delightful Rocky Mountains venue," said Walter Scott, (Honeywell Laboratories), General Conference Chair.
The conference is sponsored by the Society for Information
Display, which held its International Symposium and Exhibition in San Jose in June. This was the largest and most active SID Symposium ever held, which indicates the intense interest in newly expanding display technologies, such as microdisplays. Co-sponsors of this conference are
Displaytech Inc., Silicon Bandwidth, Inc., Three-Five Systems, Inc., TLC International, and Zight
Corp.
Is the microdisplay industry ready to take off? Have the most serious technical problems really been solved? Can anyone really produce these devices in the quantities needed for consumer applications? Will consumers buy products made from these devices? What products and services do the microdisplay companies need? Where is the hot research and development happening? If you need the answers to these or any other microdisplay-industry questions, you need to attend this conference. Attendees will come away with a new appreciation of the depth and complexity of the ongoing microdisplay research and development, as well as a better sense of the problems yet to be solved.
The keynote address from Ken Werner, editor of Information Display, entitled "LCoS: Walking the Walk?" will evaluate the substance behind the claims from many manufacturers that products can be made in high volumes today.
The three-day technical program will be an international offering, with speakers from 8 countries representing 30 different companies and universities. The program will be divided into 4 topical groups starting with the
Applications category. Beginning with a summary of the market for microdisplays and their applications, seven additional speakers will review their technical achievements and discoveries developing practical applications for microdisplay devices. The next topical group will feature seven speakers detailing the latest achievements in the
Components category. Covered topics will include light sources and backlights, color filters, projection components & systems, drive electronics, and ferroelectric LC materials.
The third program category will focus on Manufacturing and Test with 7 speakers emphasizing the practical developments made most recently in the areas of packaging, in-production measurement, and final product performance analysis. The fourth, and most technologically diverse session will deal with
Devices and their Characterization. A variety of breakthroughs from 12 different authors will be presented in various technologies including liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), organic LED (OLED), field-emission displays (FEDs), and electroluminescence.
The technical program is capped off with a roundtable hosted by Displaytech bringing in leaders of the microdisplay industry to discuss the future and issues of this technology.
The exhibition will feature the latest developments and services from a number of well-known companies including Applied Films Corporation, DisplayCheck LLC, Displaytech, Inc., Integral Vision, Inc., Opton, Inc., Three-Five Systems, Inc., TLC International, Westar Corporation, and Zight Corporation.
