Which Displays
Should Designers Choose for
Wireless Network Devices?
The technical
program at SID 2001 will answer this question –
and thousands more – from June 3 to 8 in San Jose
March 28, 2001 — The
technical program of the Society for Information Display’s 32nd
Annual Symposium, Seminar,
and Exhibition (SID 2001) will address many questions
confronting designers of
display-centric products, display marketers, OEMs, major display
users, display scientists and
engineers, and display manufacturers. The symposium, recognized
as the international display
industry’s leading event, will be held at the San Jose
Convention Center in San
Jose, California from June 3 - 8, 2001.
Among the questions that will be
answered at SID 2001 are:
- Q: What displays will be used
in coming generations of wireless network devices?
- A: To be given in Displays
for Portable Communication Devices (Applications
Tutorial A-3) by Jyrki Kimmel, Nokia Research Center.
- Q: Will OLEDs replace VFDs and
LCDs as automotive displays?
- A: To be given in History
and Status of OLED Technology for Vehicular Applications (Paper
5.1) by J. K. Mahon, Universal Display Corporation.
- Q: How light and bright (and
cheap) can the next generation of ultraportable projectors
be?
- A: To be given in Current
Status and Trends for Business Projector Technology &
Markets (Paper 28.1)
by S. Dash, Stanford Resources.
- Q: When will flat-panel
displays be cheap enough to replace CRTs?
- A: To be given in Low-cost
Flat-panel Displays: Paths, Shortcuts, and Dead Ends
(Evening Panel E-1, with Roger Stewart, Tom Credelle,
Elliott Schlam, Nick Sheridon, Sigurd Wagner, and I-Wei Wu).
- Q: How can the U.S. military
reliably obtain FPDs?
- A: To be given in What
Must the U.S. Government Do to Assure the Military’s
Flat-panel-display Needs? (Evening
Panel E-2, with Bruce Gnade, Henry Girolamo, Mark Hartney,
Chris King, James Larimer, and Robert Tulis).
The main part of the technical
program, which consists of 299 technical papers – plus short
courses, seminars, applications tutorials, and evening panel
sessions – will kick off with two keynote
addresses: ALIS PDP - Key Device for a Digital Wonderland in
21 st Century by Dr. Yoshito
Tsunoda, Executive Vice President of Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma
(FHP) Display, Ltd., which will
reveal FHP’s business strategy of increasing its penetration
of the PDP TV market with relatively
small-screen digital HDTV receivers using ALIS PDPs; and It’s
All About the Eyeballs by
Claude M. Leglise, Vice President of Intel’s New Business
Group and General Manager of the Home
Products Group, which will present Intel’s strategy for
creating new opportunities for displays in the home.
With 480 booths reserved to date,
the SID 2001 exhibition, which accompanies the technical
program, promises to be the largest display show ever held in
North America, and the Display
Technology Showcase (DTS) will be back with a comparative,
side-by-side look at exciting
new display technologies. And at the Wednesday luncheon, the
Sixth Annual SID/Information
Display Display of the Year Awards will be presented.
