New Display Technologies Are Focus of IDRC 2000
Microdisplays, OLEDs, Flexible Displays, and Electronic Paper
to get special treatment Sept. 25-28 at Palm Beach conference.
September 13, 2000 -- When the Society for Information Display (SID) holds
its 20th International Display Research Conference (IDRC) September 25-28 at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, the emphasis will be on innovative flat-panel technologies. Even as
relatively conventional technologies such as liquid-crystal displays (LCDs) and plasma display panels (PDPs) dramatically improve in image
quality and drop in price, at least some of these new technologies are likely to
remake the display landscape, enable new products, and allow many existing products to be redesigned with enhanced capabilities and lower prices. Practitioners have been invited from around the
world to discuss four of these new technologies in special symposia.
As a research conference, IDRC provides information about new technologies at a relatively early stage. Of the four featured topics,
microdisplays and organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) are in fairly early stages of commercialization, while flexible plastic displays (for
lightweight portable products) and electronic paper (paper that can be electronically printed, erased, and reprinted) are in development.
In addition to the invited symposia, IDRC will feature a sequence of contributed, peer-reviewed technical sessions arranged in a single
track to encourage interdisciplinary communication. In addition, there will be a poster session with 50 poster papers. The conference's
organization and The Breakers' facilities are intended to provide opportunities for networking and relaxation in one of Florida's classic
resort hotels.
IDRC is the premier annual international conference covering fundamental technologies for advanced electronic displays. It rotates between
North America, Asia (where it is called "Asia Display"), and Europe (where it is called "Euro
Display"). The heart of this year's location, The Breakers, is a luxurious Italian Renaissance style building constructed in 1926 to replace an older wooden hotel of the same name built
by early Florida developer Henry Morrison Flagler. The hotel was expanded in 1968 and renovated in 1996. The conference organizers
have arranged for sharply reduced rates at The Breakers, allowing all conference attendees to enjoy an exceptional property.
The Society for Information Display is an international society devoted to the advancement of display technology, manufacturing, and
applications, with headquarters at 31 East Julian Street, San Jose, California 95112;
