The Year of the Microdisplay at SID 2000?
A "disruptive technology" that could restructure the display industry and enable entirely new products
prepares for lift-off.
March 28, 2000 -- Microdisplays - displays with diagonals of an inch or less that are used behind magnifers or in projectors - have been
under development for years, and a few microdisplays have been successful in relatively limited applications. But the number of new
product and manufacturing agreements in the last few months are convincing many analysts that this long-fermenting technology is about to
pop its cork.
Many new microdisplays and microdisplay-containing products will be on display at the Society for Information Display's 31st Annual
Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition (SID 2000). The symposium, recognized as the international display industry's leading event, will be
held at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, California from May 14 to 19, 2000, and there will be a
variety of papers on new microdisplay developments.
The two keynote addresses, to be delivered on the morning of May 16, both relate to microdisplay applications. Jerry A. Pierce, Vice
President of Universal Studios will lead off with "The Future of the Cinema: Is it Digital?" Bob O'Donnell, Research Manager for PC
Displays and Projectors at IDC, will follow with "PC Monitors: A Look Ahead." O'Donnell will take a broad look at the fundamental
changes occurring in monitor interfaces and technology, which include the advent of microdisplay-based monitors.
The SID 2000 Monday Seminars (May 15) include a three-seminar track on microdisplays: "LCoS and Microdisplays Overview,"
presented by Chris Chinnock, Senior Editor of Microdisplay
Report; "Silicon Technology for Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplays,"
by Ian Underwood of The University of
Edinburgh; and "Liquid Crystals for LCoS," by Matthias Pfeiffer, Senior Staff Scientist at
Three-Five Systems. That's an intensive 4½ hours of microdisplay knowledge in one day from three leaders in the field.
Microdisplays will also be discussed in Technical Session 15: New Technologies for Projection Imaging; Session 21: Applications -
Projection Displays; and in the Poster Sessions, among others.
This year's Display Technology Showcase will feature a selection of microdisplays for direct comparison with each other and with
conventional technologies. Among the microdisplay technologies and products at DTS are those from Christie Digital Systems, Colorado
Microdisplay, DisplayTech, Inviso, MicroDisplay Corp., and Three-Five Systems. DisplayTech will be showing the Samsung
rear-projection HDTV receiver built around its LightCaster™ LCoS microdisplay; Christie will show a high-output DMD projector.
Of course, SID 2000 is not only about microdisplays. It covers the entire arena of display technology, integration, applications,
manufacturing, and components - including liquid-crystal displays, plasma displays, cathode-ray tubes, FEDs, OLEDs, and displays for
television, monitors, projectors, and the explosively expanding category of portable electronic devices. Today's intense interest in plastic
substrates will be reflected in the technical sessions, as will the revival of interest in FEDs.

Note to Editors and Writers: The Microdisplay Roundtable at the SID Symposium is the press-and-analysts-only event that established
microdisplays as a separate industry segment. It is a reliable generator of exciting technology, business, and product stories, and will be
held this year on Wednesday, May 17, at 10:00 am.
Calendar editors, please note: The Society for Information Display's 2000 International Symposium, Seminar, and Exhibition (SID 2000)
