International Display Community to Celebrate a Vibrant Year at
SID 2000 in Long Beach
Technical achievements and expanding markets will fuel an extensive
program of technical papers, seminars, and special events - and the largest
displays, components and applications trade show ever held in North
America.
January 19, 2000 -- The Society for Information Display will hold its 31st Annual Symposium, Seminar, and
Exhibition (SID 2000) at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in Long Beach, California
from May 14 to 19, 2000.
"The annual SID Symposium has become the leading international forum for electronic -display products,
technology, systems, integration, applications, product engineering, manufacturing, testing, and human
factors, and is covered by technical and business journalists from around the world," said SID
President-Elect Aris Silzars (Northlight Displays), who will be installed as President during the event.
The exhibition promises to be the largest display show ever held in North America, and the Display
Technology Showcase (DTS) will be back with an even wider variety of display and component
technologies. As has been true since its inception, the now-famous DTS will provide cross-technology
comparisons of displays to help attendees evaluate different displays and technologies, and match
technologies to applications. A new addition will be a seminar, with demonstrations, on the making of
display measurements by Paul Boynton of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) in the DTS tent.
Display Week will kick off with half-day short courses on Sunday May 14th and an expanded program of
90-minute seminars on Monday May 15th. The seminars are being taught by a remarkable collection of
instructors, including David Mentley (Stanford Resources), Shigeo Mikoshiba (Univ. of
Electro-Communications, Tokyo), Tei Iki (Sony Electronics, San Diego), Shinji Morozumi (Prime View
International, Hsinchu, Taiwan), Terry Scheffer (In Focus Systems, Hilo, Hawaii), Takashi Ohta (Hitachi,
Mobara), and Tsutae Shinoda (Fujitsu Laboratories, Hyogo). There will be two brand-new seminar
"minitracks" on display manufacturing and liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) microdisplays. The seminars
provide a unique opportunity to "sit at the feet" of knowledgeable and insightful teachers, some of whom
have literally created the display landscape we know today - and are now reshaping that landscape for the
future. "Our goal, which we worked hard to achieve, was to choose seminar topics and instructors that
would make the Seminars as exciting and rewarding as the technologies they cover," said Seminar Chair
Evan Colgan (IBM Research). "We wanted to make sure that the Seminars would be a 'can't-miss' event, as
well as a great value."
A rich multi-track menu of technical symposium papers, vendor exhibits, application sessions, roundtable
discussions, and special events held from Tuesday May 16th to Thursday May 18th will provide all
designers, manufacturers, marketers, integrators, and end users of displays with rewarding choices,
whatever their technical interests.
The technical sessions will be anchored with over 30 invited papers. SID 2000 Technical Program
Committee Chair Brian Berkeley (Apple Computer) commented: "We are emphasizing the applications and
manufacturing areas in our invited papers this year, and emissive displays are coming into their own.
Increasing densities, ever-larger panel sizes, and lower-cost techniques such as reduced mask steps will be
presented in the active-matrix sessions. I believe the technical advances being reported this year are very
significant, and the overall quality of the papers is very high."
At the Wednesday luncheon, the Fifth Annual SID
Information Display Display of the Year Awards will be presented. The winners of this year's Gold Awards are Toshiba's family of low
temperature-polysilicon TFTLCDs with integrated drivers, Sharp's 20-inch LCD television receiver, and
Pixelworks' single-chip ImageProcessor™ display controllers.
