LG.Philips LCD Introduces 100-in. LCD Panel, the Largest in the World

SEOUL, South Korea - LG.Philips LCD announced on March 8 it has developed the largest thin-film-transistor liquid-crystal-display (TFT-LCD) panel in the world, measuring 100 ins. The largest available TFT-LCD panel had been 82 inches, and LG.Philips LCD said its new 100-in. panel is 1.5 times larger than the 82-in. panels.

At more than 2.2 meters in height and 1.2 meters in width, the 100-in. panel rivals the size of the largest plasma display televisions currently available.

LG.Philips LCD developed the panel at its P7 seventh-generation substrate facility in Paju, South Korea, which it states is the world's largest seventh generation substrate size (1950 x 2250mm) fabrication line.

The panel offers high-definition picture quality without distorting the video signals thanks to LG.Philips LCD's proprietary copper-based interconnect technology, which has low electrical resistance and enables transmission of video signals across an entire large-area LCD screen without noise. The wide-screen (16:9) panel features a response speed below 5ms, offers 6.22 million-pixels and full high-definition (HD) grade picture quality, and can reproduce 1.07 billion colors. The panel also offers a maximum 3000:1 contrast ratio, color reproduction of 92 percent, and an omni-directional, 180-degree viewing angle based on Super IPS and super-large compensation film technologies.

"Technological advances for large-area LCD TVs, such as the 100-in. LCD, will act as a catalyst that accelerates customer demand for high picture quality and large screens," Sang Deog Yeo, LG.Philips LCD's Executive Vice President for Development Center, said in a press release.

Corning Makes Substantial Investments in LCD Glass Manufacturing in Korea, China

CORNING, N.Y. - Diversified technology company Corning Inc. announced in early February that it will be making significant investments in liquid-crystal glass substrate manufacturing in China and Korea.

Corning plans to invest $75 million in Samsung Corning Precision Glass Co. Ltd. (SCP), a joint venture with Samsung in which each company will continue to have a 50% ownership.

Corning has also announced it plans to establish a new liquid-crystal display (LCD) glass substrate finishing facility in China. This will be the first thin-film transistor (TFT)-LCD glass substrate production facility in mainland China, according to Corning.

The company is currently considering several locations for the plant and has not disclosed the amount of funding for the project.

On Feb. 3, Corning's Chief Operating Officer, Peter F. Volanakis, told investors the company's LCD glass volume is expected to grow at a faster pace than the market in 2006.
