Graphics Shipments Increase 13 Percent in Q4'02
Tiburon,
California, January 30 - Jon Peddie Research (JPR) today
announced estimated graphics shipments and supplier market
share for the fourth calendar quarter of 2002. JPR estimates
that approximately 53 million PC graphics devices were
shipped from nine suppliers in Q4'02, a 13-percent increase
over to the previous quarter. Growth across industry
segments was well distributed in Q4'02 as compared to Q3'02,
in which segment growth was limited to chipsets with
integrated graphics for desktop PC platforms.
"Growth
occurred in both the mobile and desktop segments and in
shipments of discrete and integrated graphics chipsets
during the fourth quarter," said Lisa Epstein, a senior
analyst at JPR. "Strong growth in the fourth quarter is
typical for the PC industry; however, graphics shipments
outpaced CPU shipments by approximately 30 percent during
the period, indicating a larger total available market (TAM)
for graphics due in part to a strong attach rate of discrete
graphics to integrated solutions," Epstein concluded.
The mobile
segment led growth in Q4'02, with shipments increasing 25
percent as compared to Q3'02. The desktop segment grew by a
more moderate 11% percent Integrated graphics shipments
increased by 17 percent and discrete graphics shipments
increased by 9 percent during the quarter. However, only
five of nine suppliers drove growth in Q4'02: ATI, Intel,
Nvidia, SiS, and VIA. Small players were increasingly
marginalized with either flat or reduced shipments.
As compared
to Q3'02, Nvidia saw a 13-percent increase in graphics
shipments in Q4'02 and was the largest supplier of PC
graphics devices worldwide, but with a reduced share of the
total graphics market. Intel was the second largest supplier
in Q4'02, with a 12-percnet increase in graphics shipments
and an increased share of the total graphics market. In
third position, ATI saw an 18-percent increase in graphics
shipments in Q4'02, with a relatively steady share of the
total graphics market.

Optiva
Closes $30 Million Total Series C Financing
South San
Francisco, California, January 7 - Optiva, Inc. announced
today the second closing of $21 million to its
oversubscribed Series C funding, bringing the total funding
raised for the round to $30 million. JPMorgan Partners led
the funding with participation in the second closing from
Korea's Daehong Corporation, Eastman Chemical Company, and
earlier investors Fidulex Management Inc., Harris &
Harris Group, Merifin Capital, and NextGen Partners LLC.
Rodney Ferguson and Alan Marty of JPMorgan Partners have
joined the company's Board of Directors.
The funds
will be utilized to expand operations, sales, and
application support efforts, as well as to support ongoing
research and development efforts to enhance Optiva Thin
Crystal Film (TCF™) technology. The company's first
products are a new class of self-assembling polarizers,
retarders, and enhancement films that address the $28
billion flat-panel-display industry. Optiva TCF films
simplify display construction, while making them more
durable and thinner, and while giving better viewing
performance, said a company statement.
Originally
planning to raise $15-20 million in C-round financing,
Optiva faced strong demand from both institutional and
strategic investors. The company's board decided to expand
the funding round to $30 million total, including the
previously announced $9 million in initial Series C funding.
"Optiva's ability to raise funding of this magnitude in
this very challenging economy, along with the participation
of strategic investors such as DSM and Eastman, is strong
validation of our proprietary technology, company focus, and
market opportunity," stated Andrew Wahl, president and
CEO of Optiva.
