Shigeo Mikoshiba
Shigeo Mikoshiba received B. Sc. and M. Sc. Degrees from
Tokyo Institute of Technology, Tokyo, Japan in 1965 and 1967.
Then he moved to Canada and earned Ph.D. Degree from
University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alta. in 1971. After the
graduation, he joined the Department of Physics , University
of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC as a Post Doctoral Fellow.
In 1973 he returned to Japan to work for Central Research
Laboratory, Hitachi, Ltd., Tokyo, and in 1991 he started his
career as a professor at the Department of Electronic
Engineering, The University of Electro-Communications, Tokyo.
He published two books, 50 refereed papers, and gave seven SID
Seminar Talks. He also has about 150 patent applications.
Since he became a member of SID in 1975, he has been
involved in various SID activities. Among them are SID Japan
Chapter Chair (1997-1998), Japan Chapter Director (1999), IDRC
'95 Program Chair, IDW '97 Steering Chair, IDW '99 Organizing
Chair, and IDW '00 Conference Chair. He also served or is
serving as Associate Editors of Journal of SID and Information
Display Magazine.
He received the following awards:

Eduard Rhein Preise from Eduard Rhein Stiftung, West Germany,
by his work on "Gas Discharge Flat Panel Display
Developed under Application of the Townsend Effect"
(1988)

SID Special Recognition Award, with the citation, "For
his outstanding contributions to the advancement of plasma
display technology" (1991)

SID Fellow Award, with the citation, "For his outstanding
contributions to research on plasma displays and for his many
years of leadership in the display community (1995)

Niwa-Takayanagi Prize from Inst. Image Information and
Television Engineeers, with the citation, "Establishment
of Fundamental Technologies for Thin, High-Resolution, and
Large Area Color PDPs" (1997)

SID President's Citation Award, with the citation, "For
his outstanding contributions as Organizing Chair to the
success of the 1999 International Display Workshops"
