Allan R. Kmetz
Dr.
Kmetz was educated at Yale University. He has been active in
display research since 1970, working for five years each at
Texas Instruments in Dallas and Brown Boveri in Switzerland
before joining Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ, where he
completed twenty years as Technical Manager and Distinguished
Member of Technical Staff. His principal scientific
contributions relate to alignment, addressing and
characterization of LCDs; he also has worked on CCDs and
ferroelectrics and has managed developments of AMLCDs and
fiber optics. In 1999 he transferred to the Intellectual
Property Division, first within Lucent Technologies and then
with the spin-off Agere Systems, from which he recently
retired. He remains active as a consultant on display
technology and intellectual property.
Author of
numerous technical papers and coeditor of the book Nonemissive
Electrooptic Displays, Dr.
Kmetz holds 16 US and 45 foreign patents. He was keynote
speaker at Japan Display '83 and plenary speaker at IEDM 1986.
He is a Fellow of the SID and Senior Member of IEEE. He is an
active member and past officer of the SID Mid-Atlantic
Chapter. He has served as both lecturer and organizer of SID
Seminars, program committee member and chair of the SID
Symposium and IDRC. Besides serving on the Executive Committee
as immediate Past President, he is a member of the Honors and
Awards Committee and an associate editor of the Journal of the
SID.
