Three-dimensional Displays: Present and Future

The display industry is looking at commercializing three-dimensional (3-D) displays. This paper presents an overview of current 3-D display techniques, including glass-type and glassless 3-D displays. The problems associated with traditional 3-D displays include visual fatigue and jerky motion parallax. The development of a natural 3-D display that would solve these problems is important for the future widespread use of 3-D displays. The super multi-view display and the high-density display are candidates for the natural 3-D displays. A holographic display would be an ideal 3-D display. However, this is a very challenging display technique because it requires an extremely high-resolution display device, and the latest research trends into realizing a holographic display are also reported.
