White LED Backlights for LCD Notebook Computers

Substantial improvements in
the luminous efficiency and operational temperature of
white-light-emitting diodes (LEDs) has led to serious consideration of
the use of white LEDs for backlighting LCDs in notebook computers (NBCs).
Technical advantages overshadow the increase in cost of using white LEDs
over CCFLs for backlight applications in NBCs. This seminar will review
the major areas, namely, white LEDs as light sources, edge-lit backlight
optics employing white LEDs, recent technological improvements in white
LEDs, hurdles currently faced by white LEDs in penetrating the backlight
market in NBCs, and, finally, the cost-cutting measures currently in
progress for white LEDs.
