EXHIBITOR PRESS CONFERENCES
In addition to the Display Week Press Breakfast, there are a number
of press conferences scheduled throughout the week. On Tuesday, May 20,
3M will sponsor a lunch, however, 3M’s news will be released that
morning at the press breakfast. On Wednesday, May 21, a breakfast
will be sponsored by Corning. Below is a day-by-day breakdown of those
events (as of May 7). All press conferences will take place Tuesday
(10:45 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) and Wednesday (9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.) in
Concourse Hall, #153B.
TUESDAY, MAY 20
- New OLED Association, 10:45-11:00
a.m.
Managing Director Barry Young will introduce the OLED Association,
its charter member companies, and its board. He will outline how the
association will work to further the development and widespread
adoption of this important display and lighting technology.
- Uni-Pixel, 11:15-11:30 a.m.
UniPixel's Chief Financial Officer, Jim Tassone, will provide an
overview of the company's TMOS flat-panel display prototypes, which
will debut at SID, marking the company's first public demonstration
of the flat-panel display prototypes. UniPixel's next-generation
color TMOS displays boast enhanced brightness, improved picture
quality, low power consumption and flexible design in capabilities
in comparison to other FPD technologies such as LCD and plasma-all
while reducing costs. Moreover, TMOS' advantages over non-TMOS
display alternatives provide UniPixel's partners with the
opportunity to improve the performance of their systems, while
reducing the manufacturing cost of their products using their
existing production facilities.
- 3M-Sponsored Luncheon, 11:45
a.m.-1:15 p.m.
3M's news will be released at the press breakfast. Its booth
will showcase a 60-watt, 32-inch LCD TV and a Lenovo 19-inch,
20-watt monitor that uses only two CCFL bulbs. Each is optimized
with Vikuiti brightness enhancement films. An unoptimized monitor
will be shown next to the 20-watt version so visitors can see the
difference. The unoptimized version requires four CCFL bulbs
and 30 watts to deliver the same brightness. By recycling and
reflecting light that would otherwise be wasted, Vikuiti optical
films reduce the energy required to deliver a bright screen.
- DisplaySearch, 1:15-1:30 p.m.
Paul Gagnon, DisplaySearch's Director of North America TV Market
Research, will share the company's latest market research results
and outlook.
- Dupont, 1:30-1:45 p.m.
Recent announcements by many companies have shown the market
interest and technical possibilities for AMOLEDs, but the potential
manufacturing cost advantages of AMOLED displays over AMLCDs has not
yet been realized due to the high costs of manufacturing using
current vapor-deposition methods. William Feehery, global business
director of DuPont OLEDs, will cover its solution processing
technology that is being developed to address the manufacturing cost
issues seen in the marketplace. He will also discuss Dupont’s
newly announced strategic alliance with Dainippon Screen, one of the
largest manufacturing equipment providers in the FPD industry. The
alliance is also focused on reducing OLED production costs.
- Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, Inc.,
1:45-2:00 p.m.
- Display Bank, 2:00-2:15 p.m.
Executive Vice President of Display Bank, Kenny Kim, will discuss
Sony's recent collaboration with Sharp; the controversy on if AMOLED
can be the post-LCD; the next leaders of AMOLED; and the choices
Korean display companies are going to have to make to succeed in the
future.
- ZBD Displays, 2:30-2:45 p.m.
ZBD Displays will discuss the latest addition to its range of
e-paper displays, offering an expanded choice of sizes and the
option of displaying promotional color. The first to employ ZBD's
second-generation manufacturing method, designed for full-scale
product roll out, the bistable LCD uses a patented nano-grating to
achieve its paper-like display quality.
- The Applied Science and Technology
Research Institute (ASTRI), 2:45-3:00 p.m.
ASTRI's Dr. Enboa Wu, vice president and group director, Material
and Packaging Technologies Group, will provide an overview on the
company's technology.
- VertexLCD, 3:00-3:15 p.m.
Jim Kennedy, vice president of sales/chief sales operator, will
showcase VertexLCD's three new products that will be announced at
SID this year. This includes "energy-saving" color TFT-LCD
panels for POS monitor applications for the Green Initiative;
proprietary NVIS displays that exceed MIL standards; and its
pre-emptive "Adaptive Transflective" displays, which
employ an LED backlight unit to provide the lowest power and highest
brightness for greater viewability and lowest cost of operation.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 21
- Corning-Sponsored Breakfast,
7:45-9:30 a.m.
Corning has built its leadership position in LCD by identifying
existing and emerging technology needs of the market and translating
those into powerful solutions that help shape the future of the
industry. At the Corning SID media breakfast, the company will offer
expert insight into the latest in display market trends and feature
a number of emerging display technologies, including advanced
display glass substrates, strengthened cover glass, green laser
technology and silicon-on-glass technology. To register for the
Corning event, contact Sara Ellis at 617-587-2884.
- Kent Displays, 10:00-10:15 a.m.
In July 2008, Kent Displays will be installing the world's first
roll-to-roll production line for the manufacture of flexible,
plastic substrate LCDs-enabling the company to efficiently and
rapidly produce large quantities of LCDs, rolls at a time.
Joel Domino, president of Kent
Displays, will present additional information regarding the
roll-to-roll manufacturing line and the associated products that will
be enabled by this new line. Kent Displays' business model for
marketing these products branded under the trademarked name REFLEX™
will also be discussed.
- Dialog Semiconductor, 10:15-10:30
a.m.
Dialog Semiconductor's new SmartXtend™ technology will be making
its debut at SID. The company will explain how this technology
allows the main displays of many mobile devices-particularly those
offering W-QVGA and QVGA resolution-to utilize passive matrix OLED
displays rather than LCD or active-matrix OLEDs. Passive-matrix
OLEDs are available at a much lower cost compared to active-matrix
OLEDs while providing the same advantages in terms of video quality
and performance.
- Leadis Technology, 10:45-11:00 a.m.
Leadis Technology, Inc., a provider of analog and mixed signal
semiconductor technology targeting the display market, will showcase
a host of its newest LED display technologies at this year's Display
Week. This includes a demo of the DBC demo kit with the Leadis
LDS285 display driver and the LDS8866 LED driver; the VPW RGBW with
PowerLite™ DBC/ALS demo board, along with the AMOLED MURA
Correction Demo; and the Leadis PureTouch™ Family of low-power,
capacitive-touch controller ICs for capacitive button, slider, and
scroll applications.
DISPLAY WEEK LUNCHEON AND DISPLAY OF
THE YEAR AWARDS
On Wednesday, May 21 at 12:00 p.m., the annual Display Week Luncheon
will begin with a keynote from Andy Hendrickson, vice president of
technology for Walt Disney Animation Studios. During this presentation,
Hendrickson will delve into the evolution of display technology and the
various display-related challenges and opportunities specific to the
entertainment industry. In addition, the luncheon will feature the
presentation of the 13th Annual SID Display of the Year Awards.
