SID Evening Talk
Thursday, March 26, 2009Subject:
What's all the Hype about touch screens and multi-touch?
Abstract
The Apple I-phone has generated a lot of buzz about touch screens and multi-touch capability. This presentation will start with a discussion of Touch screen technologies including resistive, IR crossed light, Surface Acoustic Wave, Capacitive - surface and projected, and IR cameras including the Microsoft table top. Then get into a discussion of multi-touch technologies with different vendor definitions.Multi-touch can be expressed as a 2 touch indication that provides pinch, rotate, and zoom capabilities or as a full 10 finger multi-touch capability with touch and track. The fundamentals of multi-touch will be discussed and the truth will be revealed.
Speakers
A team of engineers from 3M Touch systems will discuss the topic. They include project engineers, development engineers, and program managers with 30 years experience in Touch technologies.Speakers:
Dave Henry, Program Manager
Rodrigo Gomes, New Product Development Manager
Tom Rebeschi, Senior Design Specialist

The engaging digital 3D experience...
latest overview of 3D related display applications, technology, and standards development for cinema, consumer, or professional applications.Setting the stage, a useful reference family tree that briefly describes the more popular approaches and organizes these approaches to better understand the features and benefits of each will be presented.
Highlighting cinema technologies with a brief description of home technologies, new information about how we will personally experience 3D everyday such as 3D cinema, 3D television, 3D gaming, 3D advertizing, and 3D cell phones. New prospects for glasses-free (autostereoscopic) 3D displays in professional applications, with some compromises in the viewing zones and resolution, are finding new uses and expanding markets in signage, office lobbies and entertainment. The status of commercial displays plus anecdotes with the latest news from CES provides the up-to-date picture of the blossoming 3D opportunity.

11/20 Luminus - Stephane Bellosguardo
Presentation OverviewPhlatLight: a large area LED for large Displays
Abstract:
PhlatLight LEDs are a unique type of large area LEDs that have been invented to accelerate the penetration of solid state lighting in displays. This presentation will explain how this disruptive technology enables for the first time LEDs in mainstream projection systems as well as large screen TVs with edge-lit backlights.

10/16 Pixtronix - Jignesh Gandhi
Presentation OverviewMEMS-Based Direct View Displays Using Digital Micro Shutters
Multimedia functionality is increasingly becoming a central attribute for portable consumer electronics devices which continue to demand increasingly advanced video-capable high image quality displays. Today's incumbent display technologies such as TFT LCD force mobile consumer electronics OEMs to make trade offs between power consumption and image quality.
The Pixtronix™ DMS display technology , based on micromachined light modulators, eliminates the need for this power / performance trade off by providing 145% NTSC color gamut, 24-bit color, 1,000:1 contrast ratio and 170° view angles and high brightness, all at roughly ¼ the power consumption of competing TFT-LCD or AMOLED displays of the same size and luminance.
This presentation will describe the Pixtronix DMS™ display technology, based upon new MEMS pixel light modulator, introduce the four key elements of the display design and operation, and present the resultant performance achieved on our 2.5" QVGA samples, followed by a demonstration.
